Nothing in BIOS but in the OS. That BIOS spyware myth is a brainchild of a poster here. For those PCs which were affected, a simple fresh install fixed it. None of their new PCs have it since. This one is barebone though.

Apparently you can restore the default OS via the bios and when you did it would also re-install all the stock spyware w/ the system. Allegedly they have since removed the 3rd party spyware from their devices which they say controls the RGB on their machines and no longer sell machines w/ them pre-installed

What you are talking about is the recovery partition and yes, that portion also contained the same malware because it is normally just a clone of the OS installed. And that is not through BIOS but simply via Windows Recovery/Restore Option (Which is still OS). If you format the SSD and install your own OS, it address all the issues.

That's *not* the brainchild of someone here but of some security researcher...I want to say in the 80s. You can include rootkits in the bios if you so desire, however it's nearly impossible to know for sure if done properly. Currently there's no evidence that this occurs with Acemagic. Asus blatantly does this with their Armory Crate software that they've been warned for half a decade could be exploited. I think last month rootkits were developed that piggyback on Armory Crate

Me, I stay away from Acemagic as I hear their quality is very hit and miss, and support ignores you if you have actual problems. Their prices are suspiciously a lot lower than their competitors for similar components.

That computer does look very cool, but I'm looking for a good iGPU and AMD blows Intel out of the water.

I am talking about Acemagic only. I know perfectly well about rootkits and how that can install tools/software to the device even after uninstalling those or reinstalling the Windows but that never occurred with Acemagic. Fun fact is that kind of security issue actually happened with some of the biggest brands like HP and Lenovo in their business lineups.

Lenovo makes total sense, HQ is Beijing. This ain't no IBM Thinkpad anymore.

What about HP then? It is a habit of us to blame anything Chinese. Among all the named brands, HP's issues with Firmware based rootkit, Malware and Keylogger integration was the worst. They literally shipped a Keylogger with their Conexant HD Audio Driver package which were logging every keystroke and saving it to a flat unsecure file called MicTray.log in "C:\Users\Public" folder.
We like to think that these are some foreign Government's plan to steal our data but in reality, it is just poor implementation. While developing their software, BIOS firmware, lot of times they outsourced them and then implement them without proper Quality Control and that's it.

I mean, don't shoot the messenger. The rootkits were in the software and it was theorized that there could be bios-level rootkits like has been demonstrated before.

Like I said, the QC of these is highly suspect. Lots of people have walked away from this company with a sour taste in their mouths.

That said, that doesn't surprise me at all about HP or Lenovo. HP was the worst company I had the misfortune of purchasing from, and Lenovo's "business class" laptops are utter trash. It should not take 5+ minutes to boot a device with the "latest and greatest" AMD procs in them. I'm sure they charge businesses out the wazoo for these laptops and they make a giant percentage on each one, too.
