Proton CEO Andy Yen has been on record as pro-Trump, so while the service was fine, I ended up canceling and going with AirVPN which supports p2p filesharing just as well as Proton did and is probably the last actually private and safe VPN for this purpose out there. Everything else has been compromised or changed policy away from port forwarding and thus, isn't suitable for file sharing.

This is my go to VPN when I need to use for South Korea.
I deleted my free account and I created a new account just to get the deal.

I've never used ProtonVPN but I've used Surfshark for about 4 years and I have no complaints. Works without issue and torrenting speeds are great, too. I get 8 up, 2.2 down. Surfshark is also almost $30 cheaper for the same time frame. Look for deals too, Surfshark offers them here and there. Cheapest I've gotten it is $1.50 a month for two and a half years.

Proton VPN app is so good, standard VPN also good, proton secure core and tor not good at all you will get a dead speed, customer service is a joke, contact them to cancel and nothing happen or any replay, they try to force the purchase

Anyone know if Proton will let you buy this deal now and not activate for some period of time after? I wouldn't mind trying this (despite the Trump connection Proton has...), but I'm with another provider for a few more months and hate to throw away time already paid for.

If anyone knows the answer would appreciate the info. Thanks!

I'm a non-techy guy, but like the idea of some protection on public wifi when traveling or working at a coffee shop and some anonymity. Can anyone point me to the simplest solution that just works? I started trying to compare proton vs. pia and quickly got bored/confused with all the minutia. Thanks!

Do a quick search about who owns this VPN company and so many others. I wouldn't buy it.
Can you elaborate? I googled...looks like the Swiss own it? Is that problematic?
Similarly for NordVPN...its owned by Netherlands company. I thoughts all these are ok, no?

I think MattB6434's post where he writes "Acquired by Israeli spyware firm. No thanks" may have been in response to the previous post asking about PIA since they were acquired in 2019 by Kape Technologies.

As far as spyware is concerned, "Some have pointed at Kape's history. The company had previously operated under the name Crossrider and was active in the advertising space. Among other things, it installed toolbars with 'potentially unwanted software.' While the company has since switched to a focus on cybersecurity, this past has made some people suspicious."

Their response,
"In an article addressing some of the questions, PIA assured its subscribers that its course is not going to change. According to Chief Communications Officer, Christel Dahlskjaer, privacy and security remain the top priority."
