This Metro Razr 2024 deal is mainly about a cheap foldable with a one year Metro lock and eSIM activation. The strongest upside is the price, with multiple orders going through around $65 or even $35 for a second line, and the phone can be used on Wi Fi or as a secondary device while waiting. Community testing also points to a possible unlock path on some Android 14 units, especially older November 2024 builds. The main catches are frequent stock and checkout failures, plus many reports that newer Android 15 or March 2025 units stay locked or hit server errors. A good fit if you are comfortable with the wait and the activation hassle.

  • The deal can avoid a port-in requirement at checkout time, which simplifies activation for new lines.

  • The phone uses an eSIM, and auto-unlock can work after the one-year wait when the eSIM is not erased early.

  • The device can be used on Wi-Fi or hotspot even while waiting for unlock, which supports secondary or media use.

  • Android update support is described as lasting multiple years, including eligibility for Android 16 and security updates through 2028.

  • Checkout can fail or the cart can show the phone at full price, including greyed-out continue buttons and missing the $65 plan discount.

  • The deal can go out of stock quickly or show as unavailable online, requiring repeated checking or store attempts.

  • Unlocking guidance is inconsistent, with many reports of server communication errors and difficulty reaching the permanent unlock option.

  • Folding-phone durability concerns include screen protector cracking or peeling near the hinge and reports of hinge-related screen failures.

Received the phone and the date on the box is 2/3/2025. Does that mean anything, in terms of unlocking? Or do I still need to turn to the phone on tho verify the build and OS date?

Here's my instructions that I modified from a post that was posted before (it said wifi off but didn't work for me).

Pre-Steps: So you have a Razr Android 14 with January 2025 security update. DO NOT CONNECT WIFI OR ACTIVATE Metro ESIM, doing so the phone will try to force OS and security updates which will then block this free unlock method.

Turn off System Updates/Smart updates, and Turn off "Automatic system updates" in Developer options aswell.
Also, just Turn on Airplane mode just incase.

Here's my instructions that I modified from a post that was posted before.

1. Download the Moto unlock tools from here

https://xdaforums.com/t/how-unloc...t-90088027

2. In Developer options settings enable ADP (How to enable Developer options? To do this go to About Phone->Device identifiers -> Tap Build number +7times it say you are developer

Then go back to Settings -> System - > Developer options -> Turn USB Debugging on (you can also toggle off auto system updates incase it trys to apply system updates and patch this free unlock method)

Now you should be able to connect to PC and you will get a prompt to allow USB debugging on phone.

3. Once the phone is connected to the computer via usb a prompt to Allow USB debugging? appears click allow.
4. Launch the PC tool called Moto.exe tool from XDA, Turn on Airplane mode
5. Click Unlock (which opens up screenshare on you computer (u can make it bigger by putting 980 on the max size)
6. Internet sharing - Click Ok on the Connection Request for Gnirehtet
7. Click Open Metro unlock app
8. Tap "Try Phone Permanent Unlock" on your phone screen. Once you see it permanent unlock. If done correctly it will say "Your device is now fully unlocked. A restart is required to apply these settings. Tap Restart now and double check Unlock Status under -> About Phone -> Device Details -> Network Lock "Unlocked".

If you don't see Try Permanent Unlock option, but instead see a Status: Locked Metro Sim mentioning 180 days, go back to PC tool, then click "Reset Metro App" from the XDA tool metro.exe and Click Open Metro Unlock app again (may need to do this several times for permanent unlock to show)

You can turn on WiFi and esim Data and you are free to update your phone to Android 15 once unlocked.

Notes: Idk why the original instructions said have wifi turned off. Because it worked when I had it on. Also, I did have my tmobile sim in the phone and noticed the unlock app had errors and switch Metro unlock 180days, but the permanant unlock was gone. I did click reset metro app and reopen Metro Unlock app to see the permanent unlock again.

Here are pics.

If someone on A15 can try this and let me know if it works. My phone was on A14 w/ Jan 2025 Security Update (phone box dated 1/16/2025)

Edit: Doesn't work with Android 15 March 2025 Security Update
Followed these instructions, but the screen said SERVER COMMUNICATION ERROR. I am on A14 / Jan update. eSim not activated yet. Not connected to Wifi. VPN verified with the key icon on upper right. Restarted phone and restarted app a few times. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

If you have the Gnirehtet issues, just click "uninstall gnirehtet" also exit the gnirehtet window and click "Internet sharing" again and look for the VPN prompt on phone screen.

Try the "reset metro app" and reopen "metro unlock app" on the tool and click permanent unlock. Also, try with Wi-Fi on before clicking permanent unlock. Just be careful with wifi on the phone might try to install security updates.

Yeah, I'm also IT savvy so I am trying to figure out what is needed here. I guess it is VPN-ing into a specific server in order to activate the phone? I left WiFi on so that it can do that but it still doesn't work.

I've been unable to unlock my phone with the January update. But it worked on the one with the October update. I saw here that someone was able to unlock their phone on the January one. I don't know what's going on, it seems very inconsistent.

Now my Metro Unlock app doesn't have an option for "Try Permanent Unlock" - I wonder what happened and if it downloaded a new version? Sad

You either see the Metro Locked 180days, or Status Locked Tmobile with the "Try permanent unlock" Keep clicking Reset/Open Metro unlock app until you see the perma unlock, now before tapping the perma unlock turn on wifi and tap perma unlock (with the VPN gnirehtet on + window gnirehtet console open)

Also, this user's phone updated to Jan 2025 update and was still able to unlock it.

The tool is so janky, Try Uninstall gnirehtet, then Internet sharing again to prompt Gnirehtet connection request on phone, Reset metro app, open metro app, error server comp tap continue. Turn on WiFi (and connect to your home's wifi if your wifi networked wasn't saved or connected before), then click Try Permanent unlock with Wifi On.

Weird man, tried these exact instructions, maybe the server is down, still getting "SERVER COMMUNICATION ERROR" message. Oh well, maybe I'll try later tonight.

Thanks, shortyman24! Finally, this worked and my phone is fully unlocked. I followed your advice and turned off pretty much everything, and then used the Moto unlock tool and then "kept resetting app" multiple times! And then somehow "try permanent unlock" link just appeared and that was when it prompted me to turn on wifi and so I did and then it unlocked, wow...
My app never prompted me to "Turn on Wifi" - where did you see this message?
