Tough time of year to travel to Sweden--it's dark most of the day, and obviously quite cold. May through October is peak time to visit.

That being said, people sleep on Stockholm as a travel destination. It's very clean, picturesque, and calm cities that you can visit. Also very easy to visit other areas within the archipelago. Maybe not the most exciting, but it's still one of my favorites.

Keep in mind, the USD-SEK exchange rate is down 15% this year, so it's about that much more expensive to do anything there compared to the beginning of the year (everything else being equal)

This is your typical day in Stockholm during this time. It will be cold, gray and it gets dark early. It's a great price for tickets for people like me who might go home and visit family, or if you want to experience winter in Scandinavia.

I really enjoyed the Vasa Museum, which contains an incredibly well preserved wooden sailing ship that sank in the harbor before being recovered much later. Drottningholm Palace is lovely (except for the gardens at that time of year). The Royal Palace is also worth a visit. I have some video of the Royal Guards band playing Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling" during a changing of the guard ceremony at the Royal Palace. Utterly tongue-in-cheek of them. The Gamla Stan (the old town) is picturesque, albeit cold during the sale months. Way better meatballs than Ikea to be had, along with many other fine Swedish dishes that are hard to find in the US. Many of the cellar restaurants are quite convivial and atmospheric places. If you like opera, the Royal Opera is an ornate jewel box with reasonable ticket prices. Some of the hotels are really quite old, so you get small rooms with tons of character, although the prices are high. I stayed at the delightful Lady Hamilton in the Gamla Stan, but if you want a modern experience with a room that wouldn't be out of place in the US, the Sheraton Stockholm was that. I'm sure there are many other fine hotels, but the only other time I visited, I stayed in hostel.

Eh, not much history? The city has been around since the 1200s. Old Town has buildings from the 1600s, there are several castles within an hour from the city center, runestones from the viking ages...totally get if it's not everyone's cup of tea (especially if you don't visit during summer), but it definitely has tons of history.

I am saying, I just wasn't impressed with it... don't make it your first Europe destination.. go visit Rome / Paris / London / Germany.
