This is a great price for this quality tool which is usually well north of $100 dollars, currently it is $150 on Amazon. I found 6 of these at my local Lowe's store (45324) in "The Back Aisle". There are other popular brands like Ideal and Klein but Fluke is known brand amongst the industry. MSRP on Fluke's site is $164.31.

This is an invaluable tool for troubleshooting cabling and wiring for phone and network issues.

An area of the store called 'the back aisle', typically in the back of the store, or the side of the store near the back. It's their clearance area...usually there is a yellow banner with black text stating 'the back aisle' hanging up in the store. Fairly common thing in the dozen or so Lowe's stores that I have visited it the South Western part of Ohio. I made this distinction in the post because these were not found in the low voltage/networking tools area, electrical department, or general tools area of the store. Typically they would be in the low voltage/networking tools area near the electrical department.

This tool is super useful.

I have a 20 year old unit, works tracing any wires through walls or auto cable harnesses .

Once you master 'riding the gain' on the volume knob, you will be able to trace anything.

You can actually trace ethernet through drywall with these ones?

Easily. You can find the proper wire in a bundle. I pulled the proper wire out of a bundle of romex in an attic by sending a tone thru it.

Thanks, I'll have to check out ours and see if they have them.

You can only use it on a wire that is not currently powered. So it would work on home wiring if you first turn off the power to that wire. Alternatively, there are more expensive versions of this tool that can work on powered electric lines.

Yes.

Or you can run all your speaker wires for audio without trim rings behind the drywall. So you can start with a 5-way surround and then "discover" the other runs as you upgrade to 7-way or 11-way or whatever gambit the audio companies come up with next.

I'm not looking to identify out of a bundle though. My moms house was wired with ethernet, but they never finished the drops.. So every wall, there's ethernet somewhere inside the wall.. no idea where they are though, all behind drywall

I believe you need access to both ends of the wire.

That is correct, for example firstly, if you have known end of a wire say in a bedroom or office and then you can put a tone generator on it. Secondly, you can try to find the tone on end of other wires in other rooms, or at a central location like a data rack, patch panel, or other keystone jack. Some understanding of wiring is needed to understand it's usage...usually I tone out lines when a face plate isn't labeled...then I head back to the 'rack' and see if I can pick up a tone on the patch panel. Hopefully that made sense...basically put a tone on some copper....and use the 'wand' to hear a tone. These devices are also called fox and hound, but you can do some Google and YouTube action which shows you how to use it properly. This tool cannot 'see through walls'...you need access to both end of the wires in order to identify what it is what. It's used more for 'identifying' than 'locating' wires...if that makes sense.

You need access to one end of the wire to hook up the tone generator and 'inject' the signal. So find the 'Home-Run' where all the network and speakers wires come together for distribution. Look around for a cheat sheet stapled under the shelf or between the joists; it's often in a heavy ziploc bag. Inject your tone to one of the wires.

Then you turn up the volume all the way on the wand, and start zig-zaging along the wall where the cable is likely buried.

You will hear the sound of a British police car siren, it gets louder as you get closer, so you start 'riding the gain' on the volume knob until you home-in on the signal.

Generally in a home, at the end of each drop, the cable is stapled in a zig zag between 2 studs. Each staple has one leg clipped with diags, so although held in place; it's easy to pull it loose. The zig zag is about 12-15" above the floor (look in other installed rooms for the pattern).
