The Moto G Power 2024 is a solid budget 5G phone, with praise for its snappy performance, decent camera, bigger battery, improved screen, RAM, and wireless charging over the 2023 model. It also has a headphone jack and FM radio, and once unlocked it can be used on other carriers with physical SIM or eSIM support. The main catch is the Tracfone service setup, since the included 1.5GB for a year is too little for heavier use and top ups cost $10 for 3GB. Unlock timing is also a point to watch, with reports pointing to about 60 days of active service.

Common Questions (5)

  • After unlocking, it can be used on Mint/T-Mobile and reportedly on AT&T or Cricket if the IMEI passes BYOD checks. It is also reported to work on Visible while still locked, and unlocked use can be done with either a physical SIM or eSIM.

  • Yes. The phone is reported to unlock after about 2 months of active service, and some users say it unlocks automatically without any extra steps. After 2 months, connecting to Wi‑Fi and inserting a non‑TracFone SIM can trigger the unlock prompt and restart.

  • The included 1.5GB for the year can be too little even for light use, especially if the phone is used for occasional trips or navigation. Data can be topped up later for $10 per 3GB or with 1000 reward points.

  • Yes. During activation you can choose Keep Your Number, transfer the current number, and Tracfone will combine your existing minutes/texts/data with the included year of service and extend the expiration by 1 year.

  • It has a headphone jack and FM radio. That makes it more flexible for wired audio and offline radio use than some other Moto models that only include one of those features.

I was about to pull the trigger on this but after researching looks like the One year plan won't count as paid service for the auto unlock, has anyone had any success with the One year plan to unlock a device?
It does count. Activate the phone, 2 months later the phone will unlock. I had this phone when it was on ST and it unlocked itself without me doing anything. I've have plenty of cheap TracFone from QVC with the same 1 year plan and it unlocks in 2 months.

The price is a little too high IMO, as I am used to the cheap $50 phones or less from QVC. Even though it has 8 gb of memory, the low end CPU and the lack of software updates is what holding me back about this phone. But if you are in quick need of a phone I guess this will do I guess.

This phone has a headphone jack but no FM radio. The 2024 Moto G Stylus has both. I had both phones but sold the Power.

I heard that when you buy Tracfone phone online at Walmart.com, their employees may forget to scan some barcode that prevents the phone be unlocked later, is it right?

OK, so after 60 days when the phone is unlocked. Can I re-activate my old phone with the old SIM card?
Yes old phone will be under manage lines as inactive on tracfone account. You click reactivate and use keep number same way transferred to new phone

Some people have confirmed new phone unlocked even after switched back to old phone before 60 days and it still unlocked on wifi after 60 but it's YMMV

Besides scanning the phone box's barcode to ring it up, the Walmart employee also needs to scan another bar code on the box's label to register the phone's IMEI/SIM number in TF system as "sold". This is to prevent a thief from simply walking out with the phone. Check your receipt to see if the IMEI was scanned.

my dad is a very light data user. home-bound pretty much all day. But I still think 1.5 GB is too little for the entire year for his occasional grocery shopping trips outside. The phone is a good one though. Very tempting...
If he's on limited income or disability, get him Xfinity Essentials service for 14.95/month with unlimited data, and added bonus are Xfinity hot spots, basically like home WiFi anywhere Xfinity has service.

If he meets low-income guideline, or receives government assistance (Food Stamps, SSI, Disability...) he can apply for the Lifeline service which is FREE through many contractors. The bigger ones are SafeLink (by Tracfone), Assurance Wireless (by T-mobile), StandUp Wireless (use T-mobile). Depending on which state he lives in, the monthly benefits range from 1000 minutes/unlimited texts/2GB to Unlimited Talk/Unlimited Texts/3GB or more.

I need a backup phone to use my other SIM card. Really not going to use TF sim minutes or data. Can anyone confirm if this is a good deal or will we get better ones during Black Friday.

Probably the only thing keeping me from ordering another one for delivery.

Thanks for the info. I got one for free from TF earlier this year but have sold it, so couldn't validate what gsmarena said.

I'm not sure I would want it unless you could upgrade your data. Any info on that?

Within the last week or so, TF made a lot of changes to the plans on their web site, removing many old ones, adding a few new ones. The Add-On options for only minutes, texts, or Data are only available to SOME existing lines, and not available to new lines. My TF lines that have existed for years can see the add-ons, but the new line/account with the recent TF iPhone13 deal has no Add-on choices.
