Just buy 3 at a time (1 spare), keep all data redundant on the other two, and you may still have a working drive a few years down the road....
People don't understand that warranties are a reflection of the "perceived risk" to the company if you will. Short warranties mean something.... Samsung perceives the risk (of repair or failure) for a SSD to be low, so they're confident in offering a 5 year warranty. WD can sell some drives for less (still making a grotesque profit) with a 2 year warranty, or the same drive can have a 3 year warranty in a different housing.
However.....
Seagate offers a 1 year warranty on these drives. It may last 10 years, or it may not.....You be the judge. I won't take the chance any more...
Not meant to be left on 24/7 with heavy use .Would not recommend for zfs or a multi raid configuration pulling alot of bandwidth. You could probably get away with a simple backup machine left on 24/7I use two in my synology 2 disk setup just processing photos Raid1 mirrorAlso enterprise drives have different firmware, exos for example or wd red pro or wd gold have vibration sensors . I run several supermicro 24 disk arrays and I will be honest the wd white drive labels even though not full fledge enterprise are better . I havent had one die yet. I'm sure these are great for a gaming storage. I think you may be ok with unraid though since it's not real Raid..Then you run into what happens if you leave them running 24/7 after a few years. Not enough data out yet.All I know no recommends these for zfs or multi disk raid system with heavy use.
Warranty is much shorter than nas models. you tell...
I just had a seagate exo go out , it was a recert x18 only lasted 10months longer than the 2 year warranty the authorized Seagate reseller gave .Serverpartsdeals. I am also running a 2 disk synology with two barracudas and accidently knocked the synology over which caused 1 disk to stop working . Thankfully the other still worked with no issues . Would have lost a ton of photos Memories Just be weary if you run a barracuda just make sure they are screwed in good so they don't vibrate or have much movement , keep them cool I still love the exo line or even a wd white label sometimes you can get a Hitachi white label drive which are supposed to be good for 550TB a year . I think barracuda is only 150TB which is pitiful . Even the old barracuda pro 10TB was 300TB a year writes .. that came out years ago.
Any drive can fail at any time. Just keep a second copy. For really important data, keep a this copy, preferably on the cloud. I want to get this but will see if it drops to $250. Good for hoarding digital media in one location.
