It's a good deal, for the first year. New users just know if you get hooked, $60 a year after.

Unless you can somehow export your passwords, you're gonna end up filling up a library of passwords and then you're either stuck paying the renewal price or losing them all when your subscription ends.
You can export your passwords and other data from 1Password. Instructions are on their website.

Exactly. What the point when you can get proton free plan which is quite enough. Or if you trust this company then just use Google password manager. I find it absurd to pay for password manager. Things which require utmost security I don't keep in any manager ever (banks etc)

I get this reasoning and then realize unless you're Zuck or very high profile I doubt you're going to get hacked. Look we use Yubikey at work too but it's also less convenient.
Then by this logic just stick with Google?? It's what I don't understand. Is this company that much more trustworthy! Doubtful

Use what you're comfortable with. This is the conclusion I have come to. It's all a numbers game at this point. AI will change everything in the near future.

I've been using 1Password for over a year.. it's decent. I use the chrome browser plug-in and installed it on my android device. It's somewhat quirky in filling in the cred data into certain web sites. It still needs improvement on android, too. It doesn't always fill in the credentials for web sites or on some android apps. IMO, bit expensive considering it doesn't feel polished enough.

Go read about 1PW's security model: https://support.1password.com/1pa...-security/
It has a 128bit secret key. Even they are breached, it's worthless data.
FUD. If you are going to do reading, read properly, and deeply enough. Or get the help of AI.
"your 128-bit Secret Key, which is combined with your account password to encrypt your data". But you better be using a good master password.

Why would the master password need to be particularly good if it's being combined with the Secret Key, which is 34 characters long on its own?

How is the Bitwarden $40?
The Bitwarden family plan (equivalent product) is $40/year.
That being said the 1password family plan (after your 1 year free trial) is $60/year

. Save yourself the money and use Bitwarden! The free version is more than enough for 99% of people. I pay $10/yr just because I want to support them and because it's convenient to have an authenticator built in so I don't have to install Microsoft or Google's authenticators! Also, they are going to be infused with tons of cash by investors and they'll want to a return on investment which means the subscription will go up. I just hope the owners of Bitwarden don't go this way some day.

I love 1Password and have been using it for over 15 years now, but I'm still super annoyed at how they handled the transition from standalone/perpetual to subscription/cloud. I've been hanging on with my standalone license due to that anger but this is still a very tempting deal.

There was a period where you could purchase standalone or subscription, but the way to buy the standalone license differed from every single other version prior. Trying to look up how to buy a standalone license on the web site simply said (in the fine print) that the option was available. Skimming through the forums there were a ton of POd people bitching about it and 1PW staff consistently only talked about the pros and benefits of going cloud-based subscription. I never found a single instance where 1PW staff guided someone to how to purchase the standalone, or really even acknowledge that the option even existed. I finally happened (by accident!) to run across the spot where you could buy the standalone license but at that point it was no longer an option.

I understand their need for recurring revenue and eventual migration toward subscription/cloud-based, and was even happy that they were coming up with their own cloud solution with things like travel-mode, but how they handled that migration period felt really scummy and dishonest to me. The product page would say you could purchase a perpetual license, but not once did I find how to do it on their web site. I looked periodically over several months and -never- saw it documented or explained anywhere. Skimming through the forums I found very consistent responses from 1PW staff about all of the benefits and reasons for going cloud-based, which of course meant it had to be subscription-based, but not once did I see them say "Oh well, here's how to get standalone instead." The consistency with the messaging from 1PW staff pushing people toward cloud/subscription, and never mentioning that standalone was even an option still, was remarkable.

Hell, I even decided to give it a shot earlier this year and installed it. The very first thing I noticed was that it was impossible to keep anything local. ALL vaults have to be stored in the cloud. Based on how it purposefully caches the vault locally so it can still function when not connected to a network seems to imply that they could support local vaults, they just refuse to. Oh, and it really, really didn't want to let me keep the old version installed to use in parallel with the new version. I imagine there is a technical reason for that, but the combination of refusing to support local vaults AND refusing to allow me to keep the old software installed so I could have a local-only vault reignited the dying embers of my anger and I promptly uninstalled it.

I doubt my ranting was helpful to anyone but I did it to make a point (and because I really am still super annoyed and needed to vent). The point is I like the software and company enough, their security model is well thought out & explained, and this deal is good enough, that I -might- finally try the cloud version and (maybe) give up my standalone version.
Fellow legacy stand alone version user here. It's one reason why I'm resistant to switching phones in case I can no longer figure out how to make it work. I'm using a Samsung so if I ever switched to an iPhone I know I would have to give it up. I think I paid $3 for the 1Password app back in the day. No way I'm paying for a subscription.

A ton of 1Password old-timers would totally agree with you. I'm still using a 10 years old standalone version to avoid the Cloud and in protest how AgileBits treat/push the early followers around. However, I may have to abandon the standalone idea someday as the browser extension degrades overtime with every newer release of browserFrown
Something to consider. If we will be forced into the Cloud anyway, might as well test the water with Proton Pass while keeping the more sensitive stuff with standalone 1Password on our own devices. Proton Pass free version allows unlimited logins on unlimited devices which may be all you need, as long as you're okay with having only two folders/vaults. Their paid version allows up to 50 folders/vaults (they said you can ask for more if needed) and they often have Lifetime Pass offer that would breakeven after 5.5 years.

I always try to choose open source software and self hostable solutions where it makes sense. The Bitwarden user experience is so bad that it makes me want to ditch it. To be fair, I'm sure it's a daunting task to make it recognize all the various non-standardized sign-in forms across websites and apps, but the end result is that I frequently have to manually open bitwarden to check the generator history because it didn't off to save password, or otherwise manually add website logins. Lots of typing and retyping.

Hopefully BW improve over time. Good luck getting good compliance with tech-illiterate family members. I've heard 1password is much better.
