18 standard capacity NiMH AAs would hold around 36000 mAh (the parallel adapters would let you use 6, 12, or 18.) Roughly equivalent to a 12000 mAh USB battery bank. A 6V lantern with four high capacity internal 18650s would honestly be rated at 6000 mAh ... but honesty doesn't sell (along with using "good" cells for internal batteries.)

I decided earlier this year that I'm done with alkaline D cells, but still keeping bulk alkaline AAs as my emergency supply. Sometimes there isn't a live charger cord conveniently available. No, it'd be silly to spend $54 on Eneloops and then dedicate them solely to this - the advantage to AAs is mixing and matching what you need when you need. What really sucks is C cells (and 3xLR44, and 3xAAA.)
