Went twice. I went in late Nov years ago. Celebrated thanksgiving there. Snowy and cold but it didn't stick. Went last year in early Oct. I thought it was gonna be fall like temps. NOPE! Felt like summer didn't end, mostly rain but It was still nice. I heard best time is cherry blossom festival but it can be pricy! Avoid summer because its hot. Nov was great though. I love the cold. Something to keep in mind. Some of the old castles you go will require you to take off your shoes. They don't have modern heating systems so expect cold floors. My toes were freezing.

Japan will definitely have you set-up if you just plan on wearing the new stuff you purchase. They got the right clothes for their seasons in stores. So you don't have much to worry about. Like dressing comfortably. Don't bring so much clothes because you will be shopping and eating!!! I didn't plan on shopping for myself but man they got great comfortable clothes. That's if you plan to wear the new stuff. I didn't because of the whole tax-free purchase. I just wore what I brought and wore all the new stuff this year. I hear the whole tax-free will change starting next year though.
Bring comfy shoes because you will be exploring a lot Something waterproof incase of rain. Light windbreaker will come in handy for those rainy days that gets humid and light to carry if it gets sunny again. That's If you plan on going end of summer beginning of fall. For the time I went in Nov I had a superdry jacket and hoody and ate lots of delicious ramen so that help me keep warm when it snowed up north towards the countryside. I only brought a light bomber jacket and north face windbreaker in oct. Only one day I use the bomber because it was windy but the rest of my 2 weeks there. I could've been in shorts and T-shirt.
You will be shopping I promise you that!

Zipair is great, I don't mind paying for what I just need and paying for extras that I don't really care about. I would definitely fly with them again.

On the wifi, I think they lock down access to everything except their online ordering page. I couldn't get the wifi working for anything else except for ordering items off their menu. I wasn't able to stream any movies or browse any websites with it.

We flew with them around March of 2025. They were great. Expect to be charged for what you enjoy but that is fair given the price. We like this model of service - pay what you likely only. Great value.

Does anyone know a good place to buy a luggage in Shinjuku or even Shibuya? I plan on buying one there to bring stuff home.

The increase in checked in luggage is disappointing, but still great for short term/light travelers. $85 for checked luggage each way is pretty crazy

I have been all over the world and there is no place like Japan. Gorgeous!!! Killer public transportation, cleanliness anywhere you go... food??? Fahgedbouit lol, they got everything from French bakeries to killer sushi to everything you have dreamed of. If you have the money go there, I go there every year and... again... there is no other place like Japan

It is the biggest deal in airlines. The weight and size limit is way higher than any other airline. Also, other airlines charge $200-300 each after the first couple bags. This is perfect for military people on leisure flights. If you sign up for their premium points plan which is like 5000 yen a year, you get 30% off each luggage.

What does it cost if we have checked bag?
I agree with the other posters. My partner and I are usually one baggers so we traveled with a backpack with clothes for a little under a week then brought a packable duffle for our plushies and we bought a luggage to bring back everything else. We ended up buying clothes and stuff over there and did laundry once. We were in Japan for 2 weeks.
One thing to note is that they are very strict with the weight. We were over .5kg and had to ride with a plush in the plane. 😅

I plan to spend lots of time there when I retired and if the dollar exchange rate is favorable like now.

You can get those 20x20x20 cargo shipping boxes from their version of UPS stores (Yamato Transport is the store's name and has a black mommy cat carrying a baby cat as its logo) for about $4 or so plus some packing tape for one-time use. Beats having to buy an $80 piece of luggage that will probably be of low quality and wont be used again. Leaves you more $$$ to spend! This hack pretty much works best if you are only staying in one city or doing all your shopping in your last city stop.

I just checked for our trip in November, outbound $59.50 for each checked bag ($85 regular price less 30% club points member discount). Inbound its $51.82, not sure why there is a difference.

This sounds great except taxis to Narita cost more than the luggage. If you do this and take the train there with the box, how do you transport it - or do you use one of those luggage transport service to do it for you?
