Personally, I think it's mid. The new model is only $150 more. Most people won't tell the differences but if you own this iPad for a few years, then what's $150 more?

Agreed. This has been $799 multiple times in the past ~16-months. In fact, the first time it hit $799 was in June/July 2024, literally 1-2 months after it came out, at least on the military exchanges. Not sure if it was available elsewhere at that time, but it has since hit $799 at multiple other stores and on multiple occasions.

The new M5 is $899 on Apple EDU, which requires no verification, so literally anyone, EDU or not, can access it. Or as you said, it's $949 on Sam's Club/Costco.

For only $100-$150 more, it seems like a no brainer to go with the M5. More RAM, better processor, faster memory bandwidth, includes neural accelerators, screen can drop down to 1nit brightness, has newest Wi-Fi standard and has faster charging (with appropriate adapter). Not anything huge of course, but will future proof you probably for at least 1-2 years more than the M4, and for only $100-$150 extra.

I've been following this tablet for a year now. I've never seen a major retailer sell for 799.99 new. Having said that, I think you're right. I don't think this is as good as I thought it was last night. Didn't realize you can get the m5 for 899 on apples education website.

Previous ipad pro hit 540-620 range when m4 got widespread availability. At those prices i would be an m4 buyer versus forking for new m5.

Ps. Conversations are the same every year. People ask if new discount of 50-150 is worth it. It is never worth it. When stock dries up, targer and alike will drop fire sale but stock is ymmv at those prices.

It's possible the M4 will be discounted similarly, but the M4 ipad pro was a more significant upgrade (screen & spec bump) than the M5 (only spec bump). I don't know that the M5 will be enough to push M4 prices down that much, especially given most users won't be able to tell a difference in power. But who knows.

There is no downside to waiting. You can always pick up m5 for 900 as stated above. But you can not jump on a 540 deal if you already have m5 or miss the sale period.

I believe fire sale here means offloading the last bits of inventory when reseller needs to get money back. They don't care about values because to them that is just an inventory item locking up the funds.

Places like swappa and such would obviously use your logic because their core business is valuing the tech and squeezing out every bits of profit.

For sure, I'm not pushing anyone here to spend $800 on this or $900 on an M5 version, to me the sweet spot has consistently been a used ~$500 ipad pro. I'm currently on a 12.9 inch M1 pro and a used magic keyboard. For my use cases, the M4 would only be a marginal improvement for high cost (13 inch + new version of keyboard).

All I was saying is the past doesn't always predict the future on sales prices, especially when the upgrade is more significant. And the MSRP changed, the 11 inch 2022 ipad pro was $800, 2024 MSRP was $1000. So a $600 fire sale price is a $200 discount on one, and a $400 discount on the other.

But market conditions are very volatile right now and its really hard to predict the future either way, so anything really is possible.

Yeah, i still remember picking up t7 shield ssd 2tb for 100 because storage prices plummeted. Recently they never get below 180. So who knows.
