This Kobalt 302 piece set is mainly a socket heavy starter kit for occasional garage use, with plenty of sockets and a hard case that keeps everything organized. The set covers a lot of basic car work, but the markings are hard to read, the wrench selection is thin, and there is no 10 millimeter wrench. The case and latches draw the biggest complaints, with weak clips, awkward side handles, and reports of broken drawers or front locks. It feels most useful if the price and included tools matter more than long term case durability.

occasional home/garage users who just need a socket-heavy set for infrequent jobs because commenters said it's only really workable if you break it out once a year or a couple times per month and can tolerate the frustrating markings and "fluff" pieces.
trza ghostwriter66
buyers who don't mind paying for a case only if they keep it stationary because multiple comments criticized the case/organizer (clips/handles/drawers) but still implied the $99 price can be worth it if you won't move the case.
RustyShakleford ghostwriter66
people who mainly want replacement sockets for another brand they already use because one commenter said they only use the Kobalt sockets as replacements for lost sockets and that they haven't fixed the hard-to-see markings in newer versions.
bamx2
DIYers doing mostly car socket work who want to cover common socket needs because one commenter compared it to Harbor Freight's 301 PC set and said that set handled "just about everything to a car" for sockets.
Phil17

mechanics or frequent tool users who get annoyed by hard-to-read labeling because commenters said the socket markings are "not easy to see" and "fricking impossible to see the damn sizes," which makes the set frustrating to use often.
trza ghostwriter66 bamx2
people who need a reliable hard case/organizer for regular transport because commenters reported the clips fell off within months, drawers/handles broke after about a month, and the side handles make carrying awkward.
RustyShakleford HunterXY ghostwriter66
buyers expecting the set to last long-term without parts failing because one commenter said the front locking mechanism broke about a month after purchase.
HOTlikeFIRE
DIYers who want a complete wrench assortment (especially 10mm) because one commenter noted there are only six small wrenches and no 10mm, so you'll likely need separate wrench sets.
TenderCatfish192
buyers who want to avoid paying extra for the case because one commenter said the tools are about $50 and you're effectively paying about $50 for the box/case.
DrRad
people who want to use it often without getting stuck fasteners out because a commenter warned that bolts can get stuck and require prying and significant force to remove (especially larger bolts on the bottom shelf).
RustyShakleford

The set includes lots of sockets that can cover many common fastener jobs.
TenderCatfish192
The socket markings issue may be manageable if sockets are used mainly as replacements for another brand.
bamx2
The tools can handle many car socket needs, based on comparison with a long-lasting Harbor Freight Pittsburgh set.
Phil17
The $99 price can be reasonable if the case stays put and the kit is used only occasionally.
ghostwriter66

Socket markings are hard to see, which can slow work during frequent use.
trza bamx2
The hard case organizer can fail, including weak clips that fall off and drawers or handles that break.
RustyShakleford ghostwriter66
The front locking mechanism can break shortly after purchase, reducing secure storage.
HOTlikeFIRE
The wrench selection is limited, including no 10mm and only six small wrenches.

Common Questions (5)

The case is a weak point: clips can fall off, drawers and handles can break, and the front locking mechanism has reportedly failed within a month. It is usable, but many buyers would want a separate toolbox if the set will be moved around.
RustyShakleford HOTlikeFIRE HunterXY ghostwriter66
It can be worth $99 if you mainly want a home/garage kit and do not plan to move the case often. The set has lots of filler pieces, hard-to-read markings, and a weak organizer, so it is better suited to occasional use than frequent daily work.
trza ghostwriter66 DrRad
The size markings are reportedly difficult to see on both the sockets and tools. That makes the set more frustrating to use, especially if you rely on quick size identification during repairs.
trza bamx2 ghostwriter66
Harbor Freight's 301-piece set is described as covering most car socket needs and lasting about 10 years with only one cracked socket, while Craftsman is noted for a much better case. GearWrench costs more, but may be the better long-term buy if you want to keep the set for years.
Phil17 eyec360 HunterXY
No, the wrench selection is limited, with only six small wrenches and no 10mm wrench included. It has plenty of sockets, but you may still need a separate wrench set for common fasteners.

Tools are great, the box isn't. Clips are weak, both mine fell off within a few months. There are side handles so you can still carry but makes it a pain in the a--. & bolts can get stuck, but that seems to be less of an issue the more I use it. When they do get stuck it takes prying and a good deal of strength/force to get it unstuck (larger bolts on bottom shelf). Be warned.

I agree ... my entire case was basically broken after a month -- the drawers suck -- the handles are week -- i got mine 3 years ago for same price ... if you get it -- get a real toolbox also ...

also -- fricking impossible to see the damn sizes on the tools ... plus kit comes with allot of fluff ...

is it worth $99 yes - BUT only if you are not going to move the case AND you are not going to be using it more than maybe twice a month

Literally only six little wrenches, and no 10mm. So plan on separate wrench sets to compete this kit. Loads and loads of sockets, though, which is great.

This looks like a really crappy set. Markings on sockets are not easy to see. Lots of 12 pt fasteners. Stubby wrenches in a few sizes. A trillion smalls that are not frequently used.

I guess if you need a tool set to gather dust in a closet or garage, and maybe break it out once a year it would be OK? I just can't see anyone using this often and not getting frustrated with it.

It's a $99 set bro -That the price of 1 and 1/2 Icon ratchets. More than enough for 99% of homeowners. Let's see your Snap-On collection captain tool snob.
