Folks seem split on this edition. But I really like it and am excited to share the illustrations with the kiddos.

I bought this to read to my kids. It's a good edition and it feels substantial like the storybooks of yore. Paper quality is great and thick. The illustrations have more of a picture book quality. I see this edition as for kids. Great read aloud edition for kids looking over your shoulder.

I feel like the illustrated versions of the hobbit have gotten worse over time. I had one illustrated by Michael Hague when I was 10. It is still the most beautiful fantasy book I have seen - illustrations that have shaped how I picture each group 40 years later

Bought and returned. Really don't like the glossy paper. The illustrations are like low quality too.

Bought this a couple years ago to read to my son. It has survived ~2 years of abuse from a toddler (got it for him just before his 3rd birthday) but it's definitely showing some wear. We've read it 3 times so far and he's spent hours on his own flipping through looking at the illustrations in it. Think at this price, I'll grab another one to replace his when it finally gets too beat up to comfortably read and when he's a bit older and will take better care of it.

My wife got this the last time it was on sale. I don't want to bury the lede: the illustrations are very poor, they look like they were drawn by a child, but the book's quality and size make it a nice one for sharing reading time with a kid. Knowing that the copy you'll use with small children is likely to get battered, I'd still recommend it.

Saw this at Barnes and Noble just a week or two ago at the $40 price point and it was high quality. Good find!

This edition is good for younger readers and children, there are a lot of illustrations and they are very approachable.
Older fans might prefer the one illustrated by Alan Lee, it has more realistic and artistic illustrations. He also did all the books, you can get a box set of The Hobbit plus the LotR Trilogy. Target and Amazon often have coupons on books around the holidays so keep an eye out for that.
