It's great to see the Adorama deals back! This blue looks so much better in person than the stock photos!

1) The Lake Placid Blue players are frequently around this price on and off. This is roughly what a Player model went for without being a "deal" several years ago, but prices are inflating and they haven't been accessible there for a while outside of sporadic deals / drops. Standard price for a Player II is significantly higher than $550 - you can still find Player Is, or used guitars or different models or open box or 1000 other options for less. But if you want a blue made in Mexico strat or tele with Fender on the headstock and a warranty, it's a good deal. If any of those are what's important to you is totally up to you.

2) Depends a lot on which Squier and a lot on sample variation. I've had a lot of Squiers and several Fenders from all different price points. One of the cheapest Squiers was among the best to play - I got it second hand so don't even recall what series it was from. May were total duds. The Classic Vibe series has been consistently good to me, and overall better / nicer to play than "Standard" or "Player" Fenders that I've owned. But I have had QC issues with some and had to send them back. And the hardware β€”CANβ€” feel cheaper. But if the volume knob feels a little cheaper but the guitar as a whole feels better and more inspiring to play, does it really matter? (This is an exaggeration to pick at a point of course - if you get a cheap crappy bridge or tuner that breaks or doesn't work right that's different..). But I've also played Mexican made Fenders that rule. My anecdotal experience is that around this price point, I think individual sample variation matters more than globally "Squier vs Fender".

Disclaimer: this is mostly rambling nonsense based on the guitars I've held and played and bought. It's a very small sample size relative to the number of guitars out there - I've never played a Player II. I did play many and purchase 2 Player Strats, the original Player Tele from this deal years ago, and a variety of classic Vibe and other Squiers. I originally sold my Player Tele in favor of a white Classic Vibe 50s Tele that I liked better, but it took 3 tries to get one that didn't have nut or neck issues. I don't have any of them any more though, variety is the spice of life 😡 πŸ’« All of this to say - if you like your Squier you don't need this. It may or may not be a meaningful upgrade, it depends what you're looking for. But if you want a Player II Fender, this is a decent deal.

So two things

1) is this an actual deal? the deal history chart says its been this price since the end of September
2) My only Fender is a Squire Strat. It's fine but the various hardware is obviously cheap. Is this "player" actually a meaningful upgrade?

I've had several Squiers and several Player II Fenders. Of all those, the best guitar has been been an early Classic Vibe that was made in China which I'll never sell because it's so perfect. But in general, yes, the Player II series is better than the majority of the Squiers I had. The Player IIs have better sounding pickups and much better necks. Most Squiers I've had have have sharp fret ends or lifting frets that I've had to fix. My biggest complaint with the Player II is nut, which seems to bind the strings. However, that's an easy fit by running some fine-grit sand paper in the slots and then using graphite to lube them.

Bought the Player 1 at this price 4 years ago. Good to see its still affordable. I replaced the pickups with a Fender noisless set for $200 and spent about 3 hours on a good setup. Plays and sounds as good or better than any strat you will find at any price

Yes, it's a deal. It's $800 at Guitar Center.

At this price it is a meaningful update and will have Fender on the headstock if that matters.

I recently tried the Player II, Player II Modified and Pro II. I was really impressed with the quality of the Players and would recommend it to most players. The work they put into the Players is comparable to the Pro IMHO.

1) while not technically a "deal" in terms of adorama price with the Slickdeals code applied, it's still over $100 cheaper than the best sale price at guitar center & musician's friend

2) put it this way...a Hyundai and a Lexus are both cars. They'll both get you from point A to point B safely. But one is most likely assembled better with better quality parts than the other. It's up to you to decide if that's worth the extra $ or not

In your quest for laughs, You imply legitimacy exists in that rambling, nonproductive comment I get it, but this is important! With an *asterisk!

I love my classic 50s vibe tele too! Mine was made in Indonesia though.

Just wondering if you can share your thoughts if the guitar is tuned decent out-of-the-box?
I am just looking for a guitar which I don't have to send off to a luthier for additional work.
Thanks for any info...
