For my money, I would buy the 4-pack regular medium size packing cube deal [amazon.com] over this one 10 times out of 10.

Why:
1) This is a mixed size set. Compression packing cubes are most effective at the smallest sizes, where for example you can squeeze things like wool socks into a tight package. In the medium and large sizes, compression cubes squeeze the corners/edges but leave you with a football shape, which doesn't save you that much space in the end.
2) Cubes organize better when you have more of the same size cubes and not a mixed bag of sizes.
3) The medium size is the most valuable and versatile size. I've traveled the world with only that one size.
4) Cubes are best for organizing. Compression is of marginal benefit unless you're backpacking in the mountains for a week or something, and in that case you want higher-end thinner compression cubes than Amazon brand.

For me compression has been game changer. I never felt the regular packing cubes really made much difference but the compression almost feels like a vacuum storage bag.

I love these, but my friend has the mesh cover on one side that allows for some view of your content. Anyone seen those?
Those probably aren't compression cubes. See link 3-4 comments previous for a great deal on those.

devil's advocate but for point 4, I have found the exact opposite to be true. I regularly backpack in mountains, usually just 1 or 2 nights but in general weight is the main thing to optimize for, which in turn means packing the bare minimum (certainly not trying to cram extra with compression cubes). Usually clothes are just shoved into main compartment. I do use an Osprey ultralight bag for organizing loose items like headlamp, toiletries etc, and another one to separate out clean undergarments but no compression needed there.
Where compression is very useful is for one-bag traveling (I use Osprey Farpoint 40). Weight is still a concern but less so because usually weight will be hauled in transit to hotel then can be partially offloaded. However, in these cases I'm usually limited to a carry-on bag ~40L and want to pack that to max density.
I do agree about the point of wanting same size (or having some bags exactly half of other size) to tile better

Yes and I wait for them to discontinue a color then buy 4 of them. Right now the green is a bargain. My family has them in gray, red, blue, black, purple, and now green on the way -- which is another great way (color coding) to keep things straight when living out of a suitcase.
You convinced me: just grabbed the green in Medium (4-pack) for $7. Thank you!

No doubt you are the person who might benefit most from compression cubes, but then it should probably be a better brand than these (to minimize weight/bulk), like Osprey or Eagle Creek. I have not done mountain backpacking but I have traveled with a 40L backpack -- an Osprey model with good compression straps. I have used normal cubes for organization and crammed them in with the backpack's compression straps.

Have they changed the definition of "cube" since I graduated?

yeah fair, I personally like having the 2 layers of compression for travel so I can fit a bit more stuff (volume seems to be limiting factor) but yeah tbh if someone has finances to travel, extra finances to do one-bag style travel (pay for premium options), they should probably go all the way and get premium packing cubes too. I ended up cancelling my order because you made a strong point about having identical sized cubes

These can be used on the way to the destination or on the way home (of course) but if you want to avoid wrinkles, they are best used for on the way home to save space for what you bought while traveling. I use the regular cubes on the way to allow for air pockets between the clothes and roll my clothes to minimize wrinkling and do not overpack the suitcases.
