Not horrible for an Ultrastar, though I tend to stay away from refurbs.
In either case (but especially with refurbs), should definitely buy in pairs to run as a mirror for some drive failure protection.

goharddrive is reputable though. I bought 4 drives the last time they put them on sale, 1 got bad sectors after i started writing to it, they RMA'd it in less than a week.

I had an opposite experience with them. I ordered 4 hard drives back in July 2024, with 3 of them being bad. While they certainly refunded them, they also banned my account from ordering from their eBay store from that point on.

I'm not a fan of them letting customers to do quality assurance for their drives, and then banning customers from ordering for those who do return too many bad drives.

Again this is just my personal experience. Other users have likely had better success.

Last year they had these on special for 110 a piece. I wish I had bought more than just 2.

It looks like the prices have almost doubled. Last time I got 12TB HC520 for only $74 each. I admit it was a killer deal back then, but i'm not going to consider it at the current price.

Typical tech / semi conductor feast and famine cycle. Every few years prices go up as demand is high and supply is short. Then new technology or oversupply causes a refresh cycle and prices drop.

I'm waiting for when the data centers have to upgrade to larger capacities due to the need for more data. In parallel they have drives that will start hitting the replacement cycle to ensure they don't fail in use. The main problem is new parts are more expensive and there will be pentup demand for storage. I think 2 years ago was an aligning of the replacement cycle and lack of demand for old parts leading to the $72 for 12TB pricing.
