That being said, I've purchased this thermometer, and I've also got the Thermapen ONE (recent frontpage deal at $69 shipped), and anybody who's used them both and relies on it regularly will tell you to splurge for the Thermapen.
I'd get this ThermoPro if you're strapped for cash and equipping your first kitchen, or as a cheap backup, or if you really don't cook much. It's a great deal.
But I think of it like I think of any household tools. If you live in a dorm room or your first rental apartment, then a $40 tool set from Woot [woot.com] with an 8V drill is all you need to occasionally hang a picture or assemble IKEA furniture, and you don't expect it to last. And if you use tools every day, you know that spending $60 more to get something that makes your day easier is totally worth it, and you wait for that $69 price to come back on Black Friday.
