Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX for $199 is basically the same as the old HD650.

And the HD 650/6XX are honestly not that relevant anymore in today's headphone landscape. Much better options for the similar price point (I own a 6XX and don't use them anymore).

What do you use instead?

For $300, they are definitely relevant.

I went on to the Ananda, and then to the HE6SE v2. Both have much wider stage, are clearer, more transparent and higher resolution. Both can also be had for under $300 (yes, HE6se's go on sale that low too).
I still have all three listed above plus a few other cans, as I can't bow to selling them. I tried the 6XXs recently just to get reacquainted to them, and they're fine, but just fine, and not that special anymore. I hold on to them as well as my Dark Voice 336se for "reasons."

At $200 for the 6XX, if you like the warmer, intimate stage, then OK, go ahead 👌. At $300? There are so many options now at that price point for cans with more compelling value.

I have to concur the HD650 and HD6xx are still very much relevant.
There's a reason they endure and it's the same reason vintage speaker design and even just vintage speakers are seeing a resurgence these days. So many audiophile headphone companies are constantly trying to fix a problem they created. They chase soundstage or bass extension or dimensional sound, it even just clarity of single instruments and they lose site of the fact that all speaker design, including headphone, is about balancing the flaws that will never be removed when you play recorded performed music out of a speaker. You can not and will never reproduce that sound.
That's why the sennheiser hd650 is still supremely relevant. It's designed in a way that emphasizes limiting flaws by not over reaching for particular characteristics or focusing on one genre or recording technique. It's based around the idea that you are listening to recorded music and not a live performance, so aim to deliver that recording in a way that you say "yes, this is what this record is supposed to sound like." Its delivered as best it can without messing anything up or sounding horrible on one song and great on another.

I think there is a place for experimental endlessly tweaked modern audiophile headphones, and I enjoy and listen to many of them, but sometimes you just want to listen to the music and not notice the speaker.

That said, it's recommend getting the Drop version hd6xx

Even just within senns lineup. Alto music used to have open box stock of hd490 pro plus for 330 for example. Way more compelling considering their two pairs of tuning earpads, cables, increased comfort and improved aesthetics
