I have most of these from purchasing various places over the years. It's time I had them all in Steam and I'm ready to replay with the kids.

I'm curious how good this is on VR. Like if you need to write down lots of stuff that won't work out.
I had the original Riven and man I couldn't figure out what to do or where to go. It is crazy that it was 5 disks, that felt massive at the time... but when you consider it is a bunch of videos and interactive images... I guess that makes more sense.

Am I understanding correctly that none of these include any VR versions?

Okay kids, I'm old so forgive me for asking what may sound like a stupid question.

When I played Myst and Doom and all those other original first-person shooters, I installed the software from discs on my PC and didn't need an online account - the internet pretty much didn't exist back then. I'm guessing that to jump on this I'll be streaming the games from Steam? If my connection is unreliable I can't play? If I don't pay a monthly subscription fee will the games stop working?

Essentially, am I buying the games or merely renting access to them? How does this work? Imagine that you're explaining it to your granddad.

You install the games via Steam and then you'll run them locally on your own hardware, no subscription needed. You need online access every once in a while but there's a steam offline mode you can activate so for the most part, you only need online access to verify ownership and then you're good to go. You are essentially paying for a license to play these games but it's about as close to ownership as you get these days aside from platforms like GOG where you get the games DRM free.

Both Myst 2021 and Riven 2024 are VR supported. So far as I know, there isn't a separate VR version for either.

Edit: I didn't see it at first but the flavor text on the humble listing explicitly calls out VR support for Myst 2021.

Makes sense.

Follow up..... If I install on one PC but decide later to play on a different PC, does this require a 2nd purchase?

I understand that Steam would want to prevent me from distributing copies to my firends willy-nilly, but how do they balance that against me wanting to simply play the same game on a different PC that I also own.... or if I'm taking a trip and want to continue my progress on a laptop from a desktop machine I had been playing on at home, is this possible?

You don't have to do anything special. Just install Steam on all of your devices and play on whichever you want. They aren't strict like Netflix. It will detect if you have loaded and logged into Steam on multiple computers, and will ask if you want to disconnect from the other ones. Or something like that, haven't hit that issue in a long time.

As long as the game isn't open and running on one machine, you can boot it up on any machine that has Steam (might have to be online the first time you run it). Word of warning though: if you have it installed on one device and you want to install it on a second device in the same network, Steam tries to copy it locally instead of downloading from the cloud. There's a box you can uncheck in Steam settings to prevent this, from what I remember.

I was wondering too and apparently yes. From the humble page:

"Redeem on Steam. All of the games in this bundle are available on Steam for Windows and Mac."

Not only can you play on different machines, but if you have other people that you consider family members you can add them to your family plan and any steam game with family share (most have it) can play copies of games that you have (one user per copy at a time)
