Has it been established that some of these 2024 phones will update to a state of no unlocking, so must avoid updating till after the 365 days is up? Seems like a bigger risk.

These don't unlock for a whole year and some are having issues with past ones.

It's also eSIM so it's problematic to swap

Wait, are you supposed to not update for the 365 days?! I have the 2024 Moto Edge from last year that hits 365 days in December. I have periodically turned it on, let the battery run down a bit and recharge, checked for updates. I've had battery life get bad before when I let a phone just sit in a drawer for a year untouched, so I've made a point of using this one a little. Sure hope it can still unlock.

I got mine a few days ago. Keep in mind 2024 models have been in shell for some time, the battery of mine was completed dead. I thought I will have to fill out DOA, it took a lot of time for the battery finally been able to start charging. I don't know if this is going to be a problem in the long term, double check your warranty with Motorola just to make sure.

Supposedly you can periodically check for your updates to be turned off; but more manufacturers are automatically turning these on with even minor updates, with no warning.

No you can update and it will unlock at 1 year. People are talking about a method to unlock earlier which only works on android 14.

Cool, thanks. I've been hoping I didn't waste $75 on that phone if I can't unlock it, but it seemed like the odds were good that I could, based on reading comments.

Why not try one of the other Motorola models available for free? Are those inferior?

(I.e. G Stylus 2025, G Power 2025, G 2025, Edge 2025)

I ordered the 2025 stylus through straight talk, got that one for free and a nice tablet too for free, just have to pay for two months service to unlock the phone and three months for the tablet but still came out to $100 with a $15 coupon code stacked on top. I saw people with amex cards and cash back sites getting even more off too.
