This Costco Legion is a strong CPU first gaming laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, 32GB of RAM, and an IPS 16 inch 240Hz display that avoids OLED burn in concerns. The RTX 5060 is enough for most games and light gaming at native resolution, while the 1TB SSD has a second NVMe slot for expansion. The tradeoff is that the GPU is capped lower than stock Lenovo versions, and the 8GB card can struggle at 1440p or 1600p in newer games. Battery life, speakers, and Wi Fi reliability have also drawn complaints, making it a better fit for performance and productivity than portability.

Common Questions (6)

  • No, it uses a 16-inch IPS display instead of OLED. That avoids OLED burn-in concerns and is preferred by some for productivity, while others would rather have OLED's deeper blacks despite more reflections.

  • The RTX 5060 8GB is enough for most games at native resolution and is fine for lighter gaming, but it can run into limits in newer titles at 1440p/1600p because of the 8GB VRAM. The GPU is also throttled to 105W here, so it is a bit below stock 115W Legion 5i/Pro 5i configurations.

  • Yes. The 275HX is described as a top-tier laptop CPU and a strong choice for coding, research, and other CPU-heavy work, with noticeably more multi-threaded performance than thinner Core Ultra alternatives. It is paired with 32GB RAM, so you avoid an immediate memory upgrade.

  • Yes. The box is labeled Legion Pro 5i, and the chassis dimensions, weight, cooling layout, and rear-port placement match the Pro 5i more closely than the standard Legion 5i. The Costco configuration also appears to be a custom Lenovo/Costco blend with a lower 105W RTX 5060.

  • Yes, it has a second NVMe slot for storage expansion, with one slot already occupied by the included 1TB SSD. DDR5 upgrade questions came up too, but no confirmed max RAM capacity was established in the thread.

  • No, battery life is reported at roughly 2 to 3 hours in real use, which is much shorter than thin-and-light alternatives. It is better suited to plugged-in use than all-day portable work.

I bought this laptop during the previous sale of $1299 for the purpose you provided. The cpu is more than enough for coding and research. I run Claude and Perplexity without any hiccups. It's pretty quiet but not the lightest laptop out there.
Things I like:
The power brick size is relatively good size compared to other offerings (the Dell laptop I replaced had a huge power brick!)
LCD screen is great! It's not oled, but colors are great. You'll have to decide if you really want oled or not.
GPU is good enough for light gaming. I don't play the latest and greatest games but when I need to game, it's more than enough to run at native resolution without using DLSS.
Things I don't like:
The speakers. I know its a laptop, but comparing this to the older Dell laptop it replaced, it's worse.
Battery life. It kind of sucks. Maybe 2 or so hours (haven't officially timed it) and that's without heavy usage.
Trackpad feels cheaper than my Dell laptop. Depending on where you press, you get a flimsy clicking noise. This doesn't happen on the Dell. It's solid throughout.

Yes this is very good if you are looking for a powerful CPU for research. Disregard that other recommendation, it's a thin and light system that is power limited and running a much weaker CPU and GPU. Don't buy that unless portability is critical.

Pro:
Perfect for programmer
It has OLED screen
Weight is 3.8
CPU is 15% weaker compared to this one
Portable
10 hours of battery life

Cons:
CPU is not as fast this one for multi threads but real life numbers on geekbench is 10% to 15% lower
GPU is less powerful but programmers don't care much...in fact integrated give me more battery life
2-3 hours of battery life
Not portable even moving in the house
screen is fine

Is $300 more worth it if add OLED screen, an additional 1TB SSD, and 5070 ?

No serious person doing research would use this laptop as their machine except as a terminal to connect to a cluster or their cloud provider, which if they have such resources they don't need to be bothering with deal hunting anyway.

And if you're not gaming or doing certain critical types of content editing, there is zero need for an OLED screen. The static screens of programs like IDEs or word processors or terminals are an even higher risk of burn-in.

The 275HX CPU isn't just "10-15%" faster, that's just cherrypicking specific benchmarks, which are hardly real-life either. For purely CPU limited tasks it can be well over 50% and there are several computational workloads that correlate extremely well with Cinebench that show over 80% speedup.

And there are plenty of tasks that can take advantage of GPU acceleration nowadays and particularly for scientific and computational research. If the OP is running tasks on his local machine, they would be foolish to buy that ultrabook you are recommending.

I'm not recommending anything to anyone. I'm just responding to the original poster, who mentioned they're doing programming. Funny how so many posters trash this deal for not having an OLED screen & complain about GPU (for gaming to be specific). Everyone having different needs or liking doesn't make it universal. This laptop isn't really portable, and most gaming laptops are same way.

Lenovo Ideapad 5i pro with 285H is not a terminal laptop (got to be kidding if you're serious). It is very useful for programming and everyone has different need (not everyone is doing scientific research and need best in class). It does everything but not amazing at one task kind of laptop.

If you look at the ThinkPad line (P series with 285H vpro to specific), you'll see they cost about three times more for the same processor I was referring to (around the $1,000 deal). You can check real user benchmark numbers on Geekbench to see the real-world performance differences.

I agree that multitasking results are significantly higher when comparing the 275HX to the 285H, but not all programming laptops come with the HX series. Without knowing anyone's specific needs (nor you have any idea what that person need), there's no reason to judge or argue about numbers.

This should be Legion pro 5i. Legion 5i is 15.1" and 1.9kg, kind of lightweight gaming laptop. This is 16" and 5.4lbs.
You're completely right, and I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion about this. This Costco Lenovo "Legion 5i" looks like a custom blend of Legion 5i and Legion Pro 5i. These details about the Costco one are more consistent with the Legion Pro 5i: 16" IPS 240hz screen (which appears to only be on the ones with Intel Core i7-14650HX processors), full vents in the back (so power and HDMI connections on the left), as as you said, the Costco one has size and weight of 14.35" L x 10.55"W x 0.85-1.02"H; 5.4 lbs. The Legion 5i has listed size and weight of 0.78″-0.84″ x 13.58″ x 10.05″; ~1.9kg / ~4.1lbs. The Legion Pro 5i has listed size and weight of 0.85" - 1.01" x 14.34" x 10.55"; 2.52kg/5.56lbs. A notable difference is that the Costco RTX 5060 is at 105 watts rather than 115 watts.

There's no configuration at Lenovo for either Legion 5i or Legion Pro 5i that I can find where someone can get a 16" IPS 240hz screen with Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX. Has anyone seen the inside of one of these Costco ones to see whether the external materials and internals are closer to the Legion 5i or Legion Pro 5i?

Yes, 1 taken up by the 1TB SSD, and then a second one for additional expansion if you wish.

I checked it out in store, and it feels like usual Legion 5 level quality. I couldn't tell if the lid was aluminum or plastic. Solid hinges, robust cooling, & heavy like older 5+ pound Legion 5 models, not the newer slim/light (~4 pound) gen 10. The main body was plastic.

Ok so nothing to write home about but still good for the price spec wise
