As an avid golfer I'm not sure this would add any value over the free apps that already provide this functionality, or a line of sight rangefinder. Just my $0.02 for those who might consider this as a gift for the golfers in their life.

Yeah, was thinking about this, but could also just repurpose an old phone and get more functionality.

I'd recommend getting a GPS watch like a Garmin. The convenience and time save of just looking at your wrist you can't beat. More time I have to drink beer. Most of their models seem to support it, even some of their lower end lines - I'm still rocking a vivoactive 2 when I golf.

Are those apps free though? I've tried 18Birdies, Grint - they all seem to require subscriptions in order to do the GPS tracking, unless I'm missing some free option.

I use 18 birdies and it's completely free.

I think the features that you have to pay for are wind/slope analysis, ai swing analysis, and a couple other features.

They may prompt you to upgrade when you open the app, but if you dismiss it, you should be able to track your distances via GPS for free

18 Birdies free version will do GPS tracking. The constant prompts to upgrade to the paid version are pretty annoying though. With that said, I just snagged an open box Apple watch on Ebay to use with 18 Birdies. I was considering something like the Swami or a dedicated golf watch but figured an Apple watch and 18 Birdies should do the trick.

Thanks, between the constant ad screens for the pro version and me being new to golf I think I missed that entirely. I've got a Pixel watch with the app installed as well, have to give it another shot next time I'm out.
