Isn't the max 2mile radius a bit restricting?

There are a lot of radios on Amazon for about $10 a pop and many are better than these. Many support GMRS and at a higher power output. They also allow you to change CTS codes without having to use software and a programming cable.

What did you have in mind besides the usual Baofeng radios?

Just look for FRS+GMRS radios with a proper screen and a menu button.

E.g.

They are just examples of the many different radios available. There's nothing especially good or bad about the Baofengs that doesn't apply to the many other cheap Chinese brands. If you're looking for Motorola, Uniden, Cobra etc., you're gonna pay more for less. Most of those brands use AA/AAA batteries, last 1/2 as long, and are double the weight. Plus, you won't be able to bump the FRS channels up to high power.
