They're definitely a closeout. They're zigbee only and that's really confusing -- not all zigbee items are compatible with them. You'd want to buy all aqara sensors or pray to the right deities.

Most people who want home automation don't want to be limited to a single brand. And most people who want an HA setup are going to be using hubs that are more robust.I mean, sure, this has use cases. But you asked why they're cheap. Supply and demand is a good answer. They're certainly more worthwhile at $10 than $60.

Wonder why the Aqaba hubs are so cheap? They're pretty good.

Dramatic aren't we? It's not that complicated. Aqara's a pretty popular brand, just buy Aqara devices and you can pair it to this system. Add it to HomeBridge or Home Assistant and you can expand the ecosystem. How is that complicated?

Well, for one they're micro USB. That's probably the biggest reason.

Aqara doesn't always play nicely with other zigbee devices.

Like, I could pair them well with ikea tradfri bulbs. They would always drop when Sonoff was in front of them. And they really want to connect to the hub device, but that's not the way zigbee always works. Figuring out their quirks took quite a while, and dealing with them is kind of annoying. The purchase price is great, but the maintenance time is expensive.

If you stick with all Aqara stuff, it probably works well enough. But I'm on Home Assistant for local control and to keep myself from getting locked in to an ecosystem.

I've been having more luck pairing Aqara devices with ThirdReality bulbs than my Ikea bulbs. Ikea is moving to Thread next year so I've been expanding to 3R. I had like 16 routers from Ikea previously yet my Z2M network only started to get more stable after adding 3R bulbs/plugs.

I imagine we'll see these prices or even steeper discounts when they run their multi-week black friday+december sale

"final sale" means they are being sunseted and wont receive support updates in the near future.
