For people not glued to their phone when they are out and about, it's plenty.

A friendly reminder -- this plan is not a normal mobile phone plan. You only get 1500 minutes/texts/mb of data for the entire year. Not per month, like literally every other phone plan most people are used to having.

Works out to be roughly 4mb of data and 4 minutes of calling per day. Some people can hand-wave that away, justifying it (it's a SPARE phone, use google voice, use someone else's wifi, etc) -- but there's no hiding that it's the barest of the bare bone mobile plan possible.
For people not glued to their phone when they are out and about, it's plenty.

What happens if you add this phone to a plan that has unlimited talk text and 24 GB until 31st December. Earlier I used to add unlimited talk text plan to an expiring unlimited talk text plan and it would just extend the dates for 365 days. But now that unlimited talk text plan is nowhere to be found .

If the plan was to buy this and unlock it and switch it to my existing t-mobile spare line, what are the steps and is it worth it?
Just looking for a reasonable quality android phone for spare and occasional kid use.

I understand it unlocks after 60 days, will I need to pay anything additional besides the $60 and wait $60 days?

When I activated one of these plans with a line that was already unlimited, my expiration was extended a year and the line remained unlimited. There was no sign of the 1500 talk & text, but I do not know if that happens every time.

Anyone know why these phones are free with deals like these? Saw a straight talk deal last week also.
What's the catch?

Nothing special. You activate this phone on the tracfone website. Make a call or two, send a text to confirm it's activated. 60 days later it will auto unlock itself. I've done this with two moto tracfone phones in the last year for the same purpose as you and it's pretty straightforward.

This looks promising. Does anyone know how much to renew the next year?

They don't renew, they just expire.

Tracfone sells the same 1.5Gb/1yr plan for $125. It's available on their web site.

No, it's definitely not. It will rip through 4MB the first few minutes out while it's still in your pocket.

And it will eat through more chunks of mobile data due to tracfone bloatware, if not carefully configured on wifi in advance. It's not a surprise to come out of the 1st week with 1Gb left for the year. Be prepared to tinker in ADB and muck around in settings for a while. These are definitely not for the casual users, more towards hobbyists and tech-inclined people, who can turn plan harvesting and phone farming into a game.

Disable the apps you don't want, and run a firewall to block everything else (e.g. only allow most apps on wifi). Leave mobile data off if you mostly keep the phone at home to avoid it switching off of wifi and using it up. Didn't have to do anything in adb to do any of that.

How do you do a firewall on the phone? How do you stop the apps from using the mobile data? Is there an app that does that

Sounds like a healthy ecosystem for a general person to use.
