I have 4 of these which I use so our kids can roam around the neighborhood and check in easily. They work great and hold charge for a long time. They do require a lot of AAA batteries however.

"The Motorola T110TP two-way radio has a maximum range of up to 16 miles in ideal, line-of-sight conditions (like mountain to valley). The range is significantly shorter in other environments, with a maximum of 3 miles over open water and 0.5 miles in a residential setting with obstructions"

Yeah honestly its really crap that they get away with claiming 'ideal conditions' range, like yeah if two people are on mountains exactly 16 miles apart they could probably get a signal through, wtf who would do that? Totally bogus.

We got rid of the ones that we had because there were too many other people using the same channels with some trying to talk to our kids. Is there anything in these that would stop that?

Nope, no privacy settings. "Compatible Receives communication from all FRS/GMRS two-way radios" statement plus a reviewer comment ..."BUYER BEWARE!! These cute little walkie talkies aren't compatible with other Motorola walkie talkies that use a privacy number (the small number underneath the channel number). They only have channel capacity and if you intend to link them with other Motorola walkie talkies, it won't work unless you put the other privacy codes to 0, which won't allow privacy."

There are like 22 channels, but we just stay on channel 9 because we've never heard anyone use that one in our neighborhood before. Channel 1 would sometimes have construction chatter.

We only use ours in the 0-.5 mile range, but we've never had a problem with indoors or being out of sight with trees and houses.

Any idea how well these work with rechargeable AAA batteries?

These are also great for cruise ships. Lot easier than bringing your phone everywhere. We communicate with the kids via walkie talkie.

Some cruise ships ban walkie talkies, claiming interference and nuisance.

They're also terrible range wise due to all the rough infrastructures that these radios struggle to penetrate through.

I exclusively use rechargeable AAA batteries. Amazon, Ikea, Eneloop have all worked perfectly and go for more hours than I use in several months.

I heard these range are terrible. If I only use these in house, would privacy still be a concern. I would think my neighbors don't use any of these old techs.
