* In the United States: Kit Kat is produced under license by The Hershey Company (specifically, its subsidiary, the H. B. Reese Candy).
This arrangement dates back to a licensing agreement made between the original Kit Kat producer, Rowntree's of England, and Hershey in 1970, which Nestlé had to honor when it acquired Rowntree's in 1988.
This is why the American Kit Kat is made with Hershey's milk chocolate and often tastes slightly different from the Nestlé-produced Kit Kats found in Canada, the UK, Europe, and Asia.
