This Frigidaire Gallery nugget ice maker is valued for making soft, chewable nugget ice at a lower Costco price than many rivals, with the side water tank design drawing favorable comparisons to the GE Opal. It can work well for months and Costco returns are easy if it fails. The main drawbacks are frequent cleaning, mineral buildup, and reports of screeching, leaks, warmth, or early breakdowns. Distilled water and regular descaling help, but upkeep is a real part of ownership.

  • Descaling can be managed with vinegar-water mixes and repeated treatments for scale buildup.

  • Using distilled or reverse-osmosis water can reduce mineral scale buildup over time.

  • The side water tank design can be preferable to an Opal when pricing is similar.

  • Costco returns can be straightforward after failures, including a full refund after the unit died.

  • The ice maker can start screeching within weeks if scale or pump buildup develops.

  • The unit can be difficult to clean, with mildew growing in hard-to-reach areas after a short vacation.

  • The drawer and ice storage design can drip water onto the countertop, creating extra cleanup after each use.

  • Parts quality and outsourced support can be poor, with expensive or hard-to-find replacement parts.

I had this unit. Worked great for six months and then died. But it was great while it lasted. Costco gave me a full refund.

I see...reverse osmosis or distilled would resolve the problem, then..even doing nothing else it will dissolve the scale buildup in time. I periodically clean mine, but for biofilm/slime prevention, not scale.
What prevents the biofilm? Would running vinegar through every week or two do that? I've got one of the bullet ice countertop makers, and biofilm seems to be the biggest issue.

It's a little more costly than just using plain vinegar or chlorine, but Calgon makes products that are concentrated for use in industrial ice machines that are excellent for keeping biofilm/algae and calcium deposits from developing. I don't own this but own a 1.0 Opal that I've had for years now and it does take constant maintenance to keep it running well. You need to be diligent about keeping calcium deposits down (I use filtered water only and decalcify periodically) and if you don't clean it every 2-3 weeks you can guarantee film/bacterial buildup. You also want to keep the air passages on those cooling fans clean (Calgon also makes a rinseless hvac coil cleaner that can be applied carefully here). Just be sure if you do buy any of these products to only use ones that are listed as nickel safe.

Not a nugget ice maker.
Everyone wants the little pebble sonic ice.

i bought the opal 2.0 when woot had refurbs 2-3 months ago. worked for a day before going bonkers with shrieking sounds at night. scared the hell out of everyone. returned and entirely put me off the idea of owning a icemaker.
yes i realize i likely got sent a lemon
139 from costco though sounds interesting
I had the same issue but it was just after a year of use. No issues returning at Costco, but it put me off on buying another one.

I will never buy Frigidaire again. Terrible cheap quality parts, non existent careless support outsourced so many times using so many chat prompts you cant communicate at all -- then when you do need a part its extremely expensive or impossible to find.

Obviously this is a 'fancier' machine for less money if your local costco has this deal but if they don't and you really want one of these ice makers, I considered both and bought the cheaper Frigidaire model ($160) and used it for several months while my fridge maker was broken without any issue. Was a big fan of it: https://www.costco.com/p/-/frigid...4000297107

Obviously I can't speak to longevity but there isn't an ice maker I ever found of any brand that didn't have like 10% of reviews talking about their breaking within months. It seems to be a total crapshoot. Before this one I had this one at a previous house: https://www.amazon.com/Dreamiracl...B08FDG42VZ It's unavailable right now but I ran it constantly for like a year straight before we moved without a single issue. Plenty of people complaining about it breaking on them in the reviews. Another example of the crapshoot that is buying appliances.

I bought it from Costco and the the Frigidaire started screeching within 2 weeks. The ice that it makes is not the same as an Opal. Its like lit bits of broken ice compared to the softer chewable "sonic style ice". I had an Opal 1.0 then then the Frigidaire, now a opal 2.0 with the side water tank. Opal 2.0 has been pretty good for the last 8 months.

Hypochlorous acid, a safe 'bleach' easily made at home with salt and vinegar, is dynamite against biofilm and is many times more sanitizing than commercial bleach. Tiny titanium electrolysis plates are dirt cheap on AMZ.

I have this $160 one now, I had the $139.97 one until it broke and returned. The $139.97 is the better nicer one if it didn't break on me. It just stopped making ice one morning after 9 months

i had this for 3 weeks this summer and returned it because it runs constantly and is very difficult to clean.
i didnt record the amount of energy it took to run, but i assume it's very inefficient. we kept it in the kitchen and it made our (smallish) kitchen noticeably warmer, which likely made the ice melt faster, which made the machine run constantly. and no, the vents were not covered.
it needs to be cleaned EVERY week, but we left on vacation and couldnt get to it. we thoroughly cleaned it and only used filtered water before we left for 2 weeks, but mildew already started growing in the difficult to reach areas that are not accessible unless you (inconveniently) take apart the machine. it was not worth the time and effort for us. here's a yt short from others: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/PTchoEEfKwg
we went back to freezing ice in trays, the old school way. maintenance on this machine was not worth it due some very difficult to reach areas

Not sure but I have the opal and the side water tank id think is better if the price is close to the same
WAY better than the Opal. We had 2 Opals and 1 failed after several months. The one that is working doesn't work that well.

Can you walk me through your cleaning/maintenance process with HOCL? do you still fully clean and drain just like you would with another product? I've contemplated adding a small diluted amount regularly in hopes of preventing biofilm in the first place, but so far I've just used it the same way I'd use another cleaner. wondering if my maintenance dose idea has legs, since there's absolutely no harm in ingesting HOCL

Use distilled water ONLY. Even "spring water" has minerals that will start adding scale to the internal components.
