This Frigidaire Gallery nugget ice maker is valued for making soft, chewable nugget ice at a lower Costco price than many rivals, with the side water tank design drawing favorable comparisons to the GE Opal. It can work well for months and Costco returns are easy if it fails. The main drawbacks are frequent cleaning, mineral buildup, and reports of screeching, leaks, warmth, or early breakdowns. Distilled water and regular descaling help, but upkeep is a real part of ownership.
Descaling can be managed with vinegar-water mixes and repeated treatments for scale buildup.
Using distilled or reverse-osmosis water can reduce mineral scale buildup over time.
The side water tank design can be preferable to an Opal when pricing is similar.
Costco returns can be straightforward after failures, including a full refund after the unit died.
The ice maker can start screeching within weeks if scale or pump buildup develops.
The unit can be difficult to clean, with mildew growing in hard-to-reach areas after a short vacation.
The drawer and ice storage design can drip water onto the countertop, creating extra cleanup after each use.
Parts quality and outsourced support can be poor, with expensive or hard-to-find replacement parts.

edit: BTW, the OG Opal has a short (IMHO) cleaning cycle, so I run it 2-3 times before draining.
The combo of how noisy it was and how much we had to clean up after each use meant it went back.
