You will get your seat assignment when you check-in 24 hours before your flight, and you may have an option of selecting among the still-available seats for free, though certain select seats will have additional fees. If you are traveling with someone else, there is a chance you will not be assigned seats together (depending on how full the flight is). If you are separated, you can also check at the gate whether there are any seat openings before you board.
If you both have assigned aisle or window seats, you can always ask nearby passengers if they are willing to switch for an equivalent seat--but this is not cool if you are in a middle seat or if the other passenger is sitting with a fellow traveler.
Airlines have made post booking/pre-check-in seat selection very expensive these days (costings hundreds of dollars extra).

Flights to Korea appear to be significantly more expensive--even though there are cheaper flights on Asiana that make a stopover in Seoul on the way to Tokyo. These are several hudred dollars cheaper than flying RT to Seoul.
