The purchase can be made using multiple purchases. In the past, you could use this offer to purchase gift cards, but I'm not sure if it will work this time since the terms specifically exclude e-gift cards (but makes no mention of physical gift cards).

Enrollment is limited. Eligible Card Members must first add offer to Card and then use same Card for qualifying spend. Only US-issued American Express® Cards are eligible.

Qualifying Purchases

Keep in mind that a Factory Second does offer full refund, but there is a $25 restocking fee (as stated in their official return policy [allenedmonds.com]).
Allen Edmonds states:
