Honestly polygon siskiu D6 SE is hard to beat for $999 - full suspension bike. Spend another $250 for better fork in a future and you are all set.

Stance 29 1 has better suspension (Crest 34 SL RCL vs just RCL, RockShox Monarch R vs. Suntour Raidon R) and brakes (Tektro Hydraulic vs. Tektro mechanical) but worse group set (SRAM SX 1x12 vs. more durable Deore 1x10).
I picked up the 29 1 knowing that, as swapping the rear derailleur to SRAM GX is cheap and easy once I wear out the SX.

For that price range I'd look for a used bike on Facebook Marketplace for $400-600. 3 years ago I bought a 26" full suspension XC bike (Cross Country) w 120mm fork travel, 100mm rear from 2010 and its been a blast. Ask them what year it is, search for reviews, and if people liked it a lot, it'll probably be a great bike. 26" wheel bikes sell for cheap bc most are looking for 29". 26" bikes are lighter too bc they're smaller. Give them a test ride. If you arent sure, test ride another till you find one that makes you smile.

You could also get a great used bike on Facebook Marketplace for $400 to $600. 3 years ago I bought a 26" wheel XC bike (cross country) from 2010 with 120 mm front travel and 100 mm rear. It's been great. Just ask them what year it is, look up reviews, and if people liked it, it'll probably be a great bike. 26" wheel bikes sell for less bc people want 29". However 26" bikes are lighter because they're smaller.
