it actually does have a warranty. I shucked a few and put in the serial on seagate and the warranty exists. it varies between units but all of the ones i shucked (EXOS) all had warranty of at least a year

Your "good friend" is a pathological liar. Every one of those claims is flat out false.

Technically, that workload rating is for the Barracuda, as the Expansion lacks that spec entirely. As for the claim that shucking activates a 5 year warranty, that's just totally absurd.

I think you need to get a new friend. BTW, the drive may still be adequate for your purposes, just please don't spread misinformation.

From what I've seen, most reports as of recent say Barracudas, but I don't think there's anyway to know until you receive it. I've also read speculation that since a 22tb barracuda doesn't officially exists that these could be binned exos with a barracuda label slapped on. But who knows. I'm temped to grab two of these and shuck them for my NAS, but having no warranty annoys me.There's also a 26tb version from Newegg for $270. Worth mentioning

You can shuck the drive. Synology locked down this year's models to only use their brand of drives and then unlocked them with potential plans to lock down again. So that's a complicated question. Probably yes but maybe no now or in the future. Lots of people are moving away from Synology over that whole debacle.

I guess I should add that these are usually stuffed with barracudas that have a high failure rate and don't have 24/7 duty cycles so use at your own risk. I'd personally spend a little more and get an enterprise or NAS drive than gamble with buying twice and going through the setup process twice and deal with the potential for lost data.

I just bought a Seagate IronWolf Pro 14TB (model ST14000NT001), for about the same price.

Do you think it's worth returning the 14TB and getting this 22TB model instead?

Waiting for the 28tb. I think it went down to $300 a few weeks ago.

If you are shucking not worth the risk. Just picked up 3 Exos x24 16TB for $200 each on Fleabay for my NAS.
EDIT: The Exos is LOUD!
