it actually does have a warranty. I shucked a few and put in the serial on seagate and the warranty exists. it varies between units but all of the ones i shucked (EXOS) all had warranty of at least a year

From what I've seen, most reports as of recent say Barracudas, but I don't think there's anyway to know until you receive it. I've also read speculation that since a 22tb barracuda doesn't officially exists that these could be binned exos with a barracuda label slapped on. But who knows. I'm temped to grab two of these and shuck them for my NAS, but having no warranty annoys me.There's also a 26tb version from Newegg for $270. Worth mentioning

Going to pick up 3, 2 for mirrored NAS and 1 for external backup.

FYI I just learned that the workload rating for drives is based on writes and not reads from our good friend Grok. If this is not the case and someone knows differently please let me know.

Workload Rating = Writes Only (Not Reads)
Workload Rating Definitions

Seagate - "Annualized Workload Rate" = Total TB written per year (reads do not count)
WD - Same — "Workload Rate = TB written/year"

Reads are unlimited.
Streaming 100 TB of movies via Plex? Doesn't count.
Copying 50 TB of new movies once per year? That's your write workload.


The Barracudas in this have a workload rating of 55 TB/year, but if you're only adding to the drives once and then reading from that point on, it should be all good for a Plex use case versus an IronWolf Pro or similar NAS certified drive.

Also per Grok:
Warranty Note: Shucking voids the external drive's 1-year warranty but activates the internal drive's full 5-year Seagate warranty (register via serial number on the drive label).

I'd personally spend a little more and get an enterprise or NAS drive than gamble with buying twice and going through the setup process twice and deal with the potential for lost data.

I just bought a Seagate IronWolf Pro 14TB (model ST14000NT001), for about the same price.

Do you think it's worth returning the 14TB and getting this 22TB model instead?
