These usually have low TBW on them. Sometimes they have a lot. I had bought 7 of these from Best Buy Refurbished over the last year. The packaging will be in surprisingly rough shape.

Works awesome in the PS5 and my Ally X, but no go in virtually every laptop. Also, warranty issues may arise if you remove the heatsink

To paraphrase my comment on another thread, there was a health issue with these that made the wear counters run up. There was a firmware update (1B2QJXD7) in Feb 2023 that fixed this issue, but it didn't reset the wear counters, so unless you like to roll the dice, that might be a good reason to stay away from used/refurbished 990s.

you have to tear a warranty sticker to remove it. Samsung has stated before that the heat sink is integral to the drive and shouldn't be removed. It also has a led backlight on the heat sink that the naked drive lacks.

Stupid Ai keeps booming and consuming everything like NAND and RAM. Seen DDR5 prices lately?

Yes there are enclosures that fit the heatsink. I have a 4TB 990 Pro w/ heatsink in a cheap, albeit flimsy Ineo enclosure right now.

They might drop again during Black Friday and after Christmas sales but yeah crazy how high refurbished are currently. Some get lucky with these and some dont. Not worth chancing imo.

Best Buy $25 off $250 via Amex Offers (targeted) is still available through the end of the year if you have it and haven't used it. Check authorized user cards too.

Usually just returns. I have bought 5 different refurbished Samsung SSDs from best buy, all of them had like 2 power ons and 5-10 hours of usage through crystal disk

So it's just a returned, hopefully slightly used item. I don't mind buying returns if the price is good. Using the word refurbished is sort of a stretch.
