There is a trade-off purchasing from Micro Center:

1. If you purchase directly from Ubiquiti you got a two year warranty instead of a one year warranty.

2. If you purchased from them directly, you also pay shipping, so the savings at Micro Center is actually higher.

Either way, the Ubiquiti equipment is great, especially if you use other items in there ecosystem which has been rapidly expanding.

Knowledge and control of your network with very few limitations. It can show you which client and which apps are using bandwidth, note signal strengths on all your access points and note which ones could benefit from repositioning. You can choose channels and channel widths by band (2.4/5/6low/6high), exclude channels (so that any auto selection doesn't get fouled by neighbors, if you have them), keep track of your upstream internet uptime/downtime/interruptions.

If you are lucky enough to plug in your single router and it works, you don't need it. If you have a bigger house with multiple access points or ever need to troubleshoot (IMHO) its a ton easier than trying to figure out what's going wrong using a consumer router or cobbling together freeware network tracing utilities and sifting through MB of text data looking for your issue.

Just from personal experience, I bought the DR7 a few months back and I'll never go back. Prior to this I had experience with Synology, TP Link and Netgear.

This blows them out of the water. Consistency, speeds, UI, everything is incredibly premium and very easy to use.

For those who stream and host their own cloud gaming, you'll never go back from WifiMan. Tailscale is wonderful, but the built in support for Unifi's VPN is next level.

I'm not going to tell you to get this at a great price, but I will recommend it with all of my heart. You'll love it.

Go with unifi if you have the skills and patience. I have eero and plan to switch. Just for the fact that Amazon owns the company.
Ubiquiti, in my experience, is far easier than most other equipment. They don't play games in their software renaming standard things with silly names, or conflating different networking features for marketing reasons. It's straightforward.

This or the eero max 7? Anyone has experience to compare? I don't need a mesh system but better speeds, longer range and reliability.
Like comparing a Porsche to a Prius. This is way more sophisticated than a Eero. The one benefit to the Eero though is that everything is more simplistic and easy on an Eero. But Ubiquiti is about as good as it gets for networking equipment. This is their more basic line, but it's still made by Ubiquiti.

" host their own cloud gaming, you'll never go back from WifiMan."

I'm curious, maybe I'm missing out on something. Can you expand on hosting own cloud gaming and how WiFiman ties into that?

The UX7 is also on sale for $179.99 which may be sufficient for some use cases - https://www.microcenter.com/produ...ted-wifi-7
Also with Micro Center you may find open box units at a further discount. May make things more slick for some users.

I upgraded to this from the OG Dream Machine and my only complaint is the crap 2.4ghz performance.
Judging from the amount of complaints I see from others, it must be a design flaw because there's been a few firmware updates since I bought it a few months ago and it's still horrible.

they're yet another Chinese company. And then this router is still way too expensive. Very few people truly need a router that costs over $100.
It's less about the price and more about the functionality and features it offers. Anything that makes your network and devices more secure is more important than cost.

Problem with your approach is people will just go buy some entry level netgear that is no better than the GLiNet stuff and yet I would put more trust in the GL stuff than Netgear or Asus these days.

I too have an alien and was in the process of switching to unifi so I could run protect on a ucg fiber. I only started with one xg7 ap in the same spot where the alien was. The coverage was terrible. I added a 2nd u7 pro wall upstairs and there are still dead spots. The antenna array on the alien is incredible I have learned. I would just buy another alien but eBay is the only option now. I've been considering using two Eero pro max 7s and an nvr instant to run protect. I can't add anymore unifi aps wired.

I can't say enough good things about Ubiquiti. I don't have this particular item in my setups but I can vouch for their APs. I have two U7 Pros in my home for two years now with zero downtime. I have two U6 Mesh APs at a vacation home, one in an attic and one fully exposed outdoors with zero downtime. I also have two old nano stations that have been operating a point to point link from our house to an outbuilding about 1500ft away and they have been rock solid as well.

I would love to have this for the cloud gateway capabilities but everything is so stable i don't want to disrupt it!

I had a dream router 6 but the WiFi range was pretty terrible. Felt like I'd have to buy several access points as well. I was hoping to switch from an Eero 6 triple setup but it was going to be so much more money just to get the same range and my house isn't even that big

Are you saying the 2.4ghz on the UDR7 is worse than the original Dream Machine? I'm still on the OG and think the 2.4ghz is already lacking but I was hoping to upgrade to this.

Is the extra year of warranty worthwhile? I get the impression Unify/Ubiquiti equipment is high quality and warranty claims might be fairly rare, so an extra year on the warranty might not be worth the "investment."
