Helium Mobile Zero is a free backup or secondary line that can be handy for basic data, verification texts, and occasional calls on T Mobile coverage. eSIM activation is often quick and can work without much friction, and the app can be removed after setup. The main catches are the ID and selfie checks for some activations, physical SIM stock problems, and reports of odd usage tracking or data limits. The plan also appears to be changing, with taxes and fees now applying and the free offer ending for new users.

Common Questions (20)

  • Signup can require government ID and a face scan before you can choose a SIM type, and pSIM often adds selfie plus ID upload. Some eSIM activations have gone through with only name, DOB, and address, but others were blocked at the ID step, so the flow is not consistent.

  • The plan is no longer fully free for many new and existing users: Helium has announced taxes and fees based on service location, and some users report charges from cents to over $5 per month. Helium also says the Zero Plan will stop being free on June 11, 2026 unless you cancel or change plans.

  • Physical SIM availability has been inconsistent: multiple users reported out-of-stock errors, temporary unavailability, and failed orders, while others later confirmed pSIMs were back in stock and orders went through. eSIM remained available during the shortage.

  • No. Helium now requires some data use each month, and users report warning emails and possible suspension if the line stays inactive for a full cycle. Some users also report odd usage tracking, so the app meter may not always match actual use.

  • Yes. The signup process asks for government ID and sometimes a face scan, and users worry the company is collecting identity, location, and usage data in exchange for the free service. Several comments describe that tradeoff as the main catch.

  • Yes. Helium removed the always-on location-sharing requirement, and users report the line keeps working with location off; after activation, the app can be deleted or left disabled without breaking service. The phone still appears to provide location data through tower triangulation.

  • Yes, that is the most common use case reported: spare phones, drone mapping, gig-work backup, emergency phones, and dual-SIM setups. Users say 3GB is enough for light data use, maps, verification texts, and occasional tethering.

  • The Zero Plan is described as 3GB total, but Helium says 1GB is delivered through nationwide partners and 2GB through the Helium network starting Jan. 27, 2026. The 3GB limit is a hard stop with no slower fallback data, and some users report throttling after 1GB or 2GB depending on the terms shown in their account.

  • Port-out details can be provided quickly through in-app chat, and once the number is ported to the new carrier the Helium account can cancel automatically. Some users also report cancellation delays or missing PIN emails, so it may take extra follow-up.

  • The Zero Plan is being phased out for new customers and will stop being free on June 11, 2026. Existing users may keep service for now, but Helium says payment details or taxes and fees will be required starting Jan. 27, 2026.

  • It runs on T-Mobile coverage, so it should work where T-Mobile is strong. Users also report it working overseas, including Europe and Asia, sometimes with Wi‑Fi calling enabled.

  • Yes, after activation the app is not required for day-to-day use, and users report deleting or disabling it without affecting service. It is mainly needed for setup, account changes, and some verification or support tasks.

  • Yes, but only if you can get a physical SIM when stock is available. Some users without eSIM-capable phones waited for pSIM restocks or bought eSIM-to-physical-SIM adapters, while others switched to a cheap eSIM-capable Tracfone as a workaround.

  • Yes. There is a $5 per month unlimited talk-and-text add-on, and it can be useful if you mainly want the free plan's data but need more calling and texting than the base 100 talk and 300 texts.

  • Helium's FAQ says the same identification information can be used for multiple accounts, but the company reserves the right to review and suspend accounts for suspicious activity. In practice, users note this may work, but one account per SIM is the normal setup.

  • Users report it can work abroad, including Europe and Asia, especially when Wi‑Fi calling is enabled. One user also said it worked even without internet in some overseas situations.

  • No bank card is required for the free plan signup in the comments, but Helium later asked some users to add a payment method for taxes and fees. If you do not add one by the deadline, service may be suspended.

  • Yes. Users report porting in numbers from NumberBarn, Google Voice via Google Fi, and Straight Talk after regenerating a port-out PIN. Porting can complete in a few minutes to a couple of hours.

  • Yes, but the native dialer may still place calls from the Helium SIM number instead of Google Voice even when GV is set as the preferred caller ID. Dual-SIM users report using Helium for data and another plan or Google Voice for calls and texts.

  • Users report that once you upgrade to a paid Helium plan, you may not be able to return to the free Zero Plan. That makes the $5 unlimited talk-and-text add-on a safer test than moving to a full paid plan.

UPDATE: At about 6:00pm ET Helium sent me an email stating, "Incident Resolved...Physical SIM cards are now available again. Thank you for your patience." My wife ordered a SIM and received confirmation number/email.

Not a scam. Have a line for a family member. It's running on T-Mobile network, so as long as T-Mobile is good in your area. It should be fine.
Ah... I was looking for a backup for T-Mobile where we have service deadzone (when it works, it is great)
Thank you for the information.

You can use physical eSIM (eUICC) in non-eSIM capable phones, 9esim is a good option
Dang nice but it's $30 on Amazon.

This link heliummobile.statuspage.io [statuspage.io] is good to check Helium service, it told me the pSIM was back in stock, and I pulled the trigger to sign up the service using my ID.
I have several questions as a new user:

1. Does the mobile service rely on the Helium app? That is, after I have my Android phone activated with the pSIM, can I close the app and can I uninstall the Helium app without impacting the mobile service?

2. If I move the pSIM from my Android phone to my iPhone, can it work out of the box, or do I have to install the Helium app on my iPhone and sign in?

3. Can I sign up another new account(with different email address) for a separate mobile service, with the same name(that is, same government ID), to use it on another phone? That is, multiple accounts share the same ID?

Please share your experience, thank you!

The catch is they harvest all your data from using your phone. Simple as that. If that scares you, your internet provider already does this unless one opts out. Did everyone opt out? Hope so. I don't mind sharing me metadata for a phone line and some data
Since it's an app, it could also harvest data like wifi and bluetooth devices around you. So have someone nearby with medical devices containing bluetooth? Expect getting medical ads related to other conditions associated with that device. Have a TV with bluetooth? They'll be able to determine the age and size to push deals on slightly newer and larger. Have a wanted person ping Facebook over a VPN on a WiFi network you're connected to? If LEO knows the WiFi MAC of the person's phone, your phone could rat them out without you knowing. That said, all those scenarios could be done through Google instead of Helium, except Helium doesn't have to worry about goodwill.

Yeah I wonder if that's the case. It asked for camera access.
I'm not ready to jump on this deal. The push to normalize this kind of verification is wild. Even for free service.
Even postpaid doesn't go this far. Yes they run credit check but not a 3rd party storing your ID and facial scans for however long in some database somewhere that'll probably eventually get either sold or compromised if it isn't already.
I'm probably just going to renew good2go for a year for a cheap 2nd line.
The January Total Wireless deal for a 2024 Moto Edge did a similar procedure. Not sure if cell numbers are starting to get the background checks that bank accounts get or just preventing resellers.

The service does not rely on the helium app, but it does need to be installed and used from time to time.

Yes as of 2024 the account is now key'd to the sim and not the device. I dont know if you have to have the app on the new device, but the app does need installed on at least one phone. Back in the day people had mule phones, they would get an old phone, install the app/sim, and once everything was setup, move the sim to a completely different phone that never had the app installed. This was back in the day when telemetry was mandatory(its off now).

Its one account per id. helium doesnt have "lines" yet. At best you can have Sprout/kids lines attached to your id.

Hardly free it seems, I'd be surprised if they're not harvesting massive data from users in return. Why else require location tracking before, and now require data use, all while having an exact ID on you unlike many other data miners? I think they're getting the better end of the deal on this, the plan probably costs them very little to offer
Wholesale data rates for MVNOs are cheap but certainly not free. If this was easy, we'd have a lot more free options, but we don't.

This company has been around a while, has gone through multiple business ideas, and feels desperate. I wouldn't trust them with my info.

Does my current cell provider harvest my personal data? Probably. But if they do something really egregious, they have a lot to lose. Helium is getting to the point where they have nothing to lose.

Large companies blowing up is an exception. Small companies blow up ALL THE TIME. They just have nothing to lose.
They have North of half a million subscribers, a truly unique offering in the prepaid space, major deals with AT&T and T-Mobile for data offload and thousands of hotspots across the nation. I would say they have a lot to lose

Helium Zero user here. Just a few remark before you jump on this deal
Don't port your valuable number - number your live depends on it . They have complete control and ownership over your phone account/ phone number and can deactivate it for any reason at any time due to free line requirements. They seem like changing their policy on the fly, before was location tracking, now data usage , who knows whats coming next in the near future. If you missed their email policy change and don't comply shortly after your service and phone # will be history…
Lots of fear mongering here, and I call BS. Even if they deactivated your number with no warning they have to give you a chance to port out. I've used dozens of questionable services over the years including a few that went belly up as I used them (ring plus, FreedomPop, hello mobile). Never lost my number. FCC has very clear rules about this.

Thanks for the comments.
About multiple account per ID, I found this from Helium Mobile's FAQs:

Can I use my identification information to sign up for multiple accounts?
-- Yes, however, Helium Mobile reserves the right to review and suspend accounts based on suspicious activity. Please review our terms and conditions for more information.

So I wonder if someone here may have tried to use the same ID to sign up another account with a different email address.
