That's not what is intended to convey in previous comments here. This is 15 year old design including the material. Also during last year's Black Friday this was $75, and I got two. we don't have Time Machine to go back but this is what they should be worth. If you think you want to spend $100 for a heavier reel with inferior material and comparatively less strong saltwater resistance than newer gen then no one is stopping you. Reel technology and materials have advanced so much in this past decade that you get way more bank for the bucks for $100 if you do some research.

Are these overruns that were stored in a warehouse for over a decade? Or are these still being produced? I have a battle 2 and battle 3 and they are solid. Never seen a battle 1 in real life.

Unfortunately, with Penn newest doesn't mean better... for example the workhorse Penn Fathom line was a beast for the price (old black models). They updated them to the new silver design and they are quite a bit worse now. Handles are definitely not as sturdy, there were issues with drags binding up and the finish was failing nearly immediately. People will actually pay more money for a gen1 vs a gen 2 on the used market now.Anyway I have owned 2 Battle II for years a they are the reels I hand to the new fishermen on our charters. Both have caught at least a couple hundred California yellowtail, pacific barracuda, and probably thousands of rockfish without any real needed maintenance. I do find the 6000 combo to be a bit on the heavy side for all day casting. 5000 combo size is much better balanced size/weight/performance for inshore saltwater fishing.

Penn Battle II's are much better than the Battle I's.

I bought it last December for $75 and totally worth it. I mostly use it for surf fishing so it's been exposed to salt water a lot, but both rod and reel holding up well
