I know this is overkill for browsing the web, but would this be energy efficient to use as a server for Plex and stuff?

The deal you have shared has expired and is no longer available. Plus, this one comes with double the RAM.

I'm wondering why it has a "This is a frequently returned item" on it? I was thinking about getting it for proxmox and offloading my CPU/memory bound container workloads, and using my workstation for the graphics cards workloads and my day to day

FYI (AMD naming scheme is bad...)

The processor is identical to the old AMD Ryzen 5 5625U (2022).
"Performance
The performance is identical to the old Ryzen 5625U and therefore in the lower mid range of laptop CPUs in late 2023." - TechPowerUp (https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD...966.0.html)

I see that a lot recently and don't understand why.
I recently bought the Acemagic deal found here last month and saw the same thing. So far so good.

i get a cluster of 4 Proxmox 3 of it is 7430U mini pc (i pick up one every time its on sale )
going to pick one more now and replace my last Intel NUC its working great only downside is the nic is 1G and not 2.5G (2 out of the 3 i get is 2 NIC of 2.5G ) ceph (that i use) get some issues on 1G so i just pickup 2.5G USB3

I purchased this exact model for $268 back in July. I bought it to play around with mini PCS instead of all the enterprise equipment and servers in my home lab. I ended up using it as a Plex server. It's working quite nicely even though it doesn't have Intel quicksync. It seems to do hardware transcoding without an issue - 4k video transcoded without putting much of a dent in the processor at all.

I have a couple bottom beelinks and they run fine for daily computer usage. I can think of some problems with these cheap minis. One problem I had was that there was no linux drivers in the kernel for the wifi. It took 1-2 years before it was incorporated into a fedora release/update. These are cheap computer w the cheapest parts, don't expect lenovo or dell enterprise level of quality for your "server". i feel if you plan to game long or hit the cpu with intense workload for long, these cheap systems prob won't last long unless you do a thermal repaste and add some fans.

I'd probably hold out for another deal like that Firebat a week ago with the 8745HS for under $250. That wasn't available for long, but as Zen 4 / RDNA 3 ages, we should see plenty of deals come through.

I am thinking about one of these to replace an old desktop my parents use that wont take Windows 11. They like the big monitor vs a laptop and this could hang on the back. Is it overkill for basic home use?

No, that is a good use case. It's reasonably powerful and capable of anything the average user throws at it, except for gaming with that weak Vega GPU. The 32GB RAM will never be used by average users, but it's nice to have. Just keep in mind this PC doesn't include a mouse or keyboard, so if the old mouse and keyboard are PS2, not USB, they won't be compatible. Mouse / keyboard sets are cheap thankfully.

What kind of wifi chips do they use? If it was a brand new wifi chip release, it sometimes take that long to get into the kernel. Especially if it's not an Intel chip. I know Realtek wifi chips sometimes has issues for years on Linux.
