The Surface Pro 11 bundle stands out as a thin 2 in 1 for portable productivity, with the 13 inch LCD panel, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and keyboard making it a strong travel and desk companion. The LCD screen gets praise for accurate color and solid black levels, and the Snapdragon X chip is described as plenty fast for office work, web use, and general apps. Battery life is repeatedly described as excellent, with quick wake and strong standby behavior. The main cautions are that the keyboard lacks a pen charging slot, the Pro form factor is less comfortable on a lap than a laptop, and 16GB may feel tight for heavier future use.

Not to mention the OLED arguably has more issues than the LCD, most notably complaints of screendoor effect which some can't un-notice once they see it. The LCD in these surface devices is excellent.
When I got the OLED version, I really had to look hard to see the screen door effect that everyone was talking about. It really is hard to see, and I never even notice it anymore. People complain the OLED uses up the battery quicker, but the OLED versions have a larger battery, so it's a wash.

It depends on the task from the various benchmarks I've seen. Even with the bigger battery in some light use scenarios the OLED still has less battery life with the larger battery, because of the Snapdragon X elite processor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrJXkCv_3PU

This is even more pronounced on the surface laptop 7 than surface pro because the laptop 7 LCD elite version has the same size 54wh battery as the laptop 7 LCD plus, and in light tasks like watching videos or web surfing the elite version gets 15-20% less battery life

The elite on both of these just doesn't seem worth it to me. In addition to the battery life, Pro 11 benchmarks also show in some games the elite processor actually makes the performance worse, because the added heat of the extra 2 CPU cores results in the GPU being downclocked. The only chassis that can truly handle the heat and power of the X Elite is the Surface Laptop 7 15". The rest of these surface devices are better fit thermally for the X plus, and thus its likely not a coincidence that Microsoft doesn't bother offering the X plus on the 15" laptop 7.

The Qualcomm specs on these two CPUs demonstrates the power (and resulting heat) differences between the two chips X1P-64-100 and X1E-80-100 - while both have a 35w overall TDP, PL2 on the elite is 35w higher than the plus (35w/45w vs 35w/80w). Considering you can't even use remotely close to the full potential of the elite's performance gained from the extra power because of thermal limitations on the pro 11/laptop 7, it just dont seem worth it for the heat/battery side effects of the extra power draw.

My Two Cent....
Yes this is an AMAZING product but I will NOT buy any computer that does not have either 32GB of RAM or the possibility of upgrading t 32GB of RAM.
I also would want a larger hard drive but I can deal. Obviously, you are not buying this to game for you can only fit a few of them. I recently installed Baldur's Gate 3 and the install file was 130GB. So you download it, you unzip it... another 130GB and you install it... another 130GB... once installed you can delete the downloaded files but as you can see that one game requires more then half your hard drive space to install.
The last thing I will say is I upgraded my memory with my old laptops and they both have 16GB of RAM and I also installed a 1TB SSD... my old laptops are THIRTEEN YEARS OLD (3rd gen i7 and i5). And they have served me incredibly well. I am sure if I never upgraded the RAM and harddrive I would have purchased new over six years ago. I say this story because I am thinking of the future and 16GB of RAM is not enough IMHO.
Hey I get it, but this is where I am coming from. Before I got the Surface Laptop 7 I had an Aorus 17X with 64GB of RAM, large SSD, RTX 4080, etc. But you know what I barely used that laptop compared to my surface laptop 7. While the Aorus was a monster and could run everything as fast as a desktop, the result of that was a heavy, expensive machine that did not get good battery life and had a massive charger.

The Surface Laptop 7 I recently bought had only 16gb of RAM, but I use it tons more because its super light and the battery lasts forever. I actually feel its faster for general use than the 17X was because its instant on/off with no battery drain in standby and typical light apps open instantly - the performance of the 17X when it wasn't plugged into the wall actually seemed worse to me despite the impressive spec sheet. The surface laptop 7 came with 512GB SSD but I opened it up and installed a 2TB $149 Crucial M.2 2230 SSD, which is cheaper than what it would have cost to pay for a 1TB model from Microsoft and is also a faster drive! The Surface Pro 11 its even easier to upgrade the SSD, there is a door on the back that slides open with your finger - dont even need to unscrew anything other than the one T3 screw holding the old SSD in place, you can upgrade the SSD in like 5 minutes. Crucial P310 2TB is $148 on Amazon right now: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-20...0D61SDZD2/

So really the only issue here for you is 16GB vs 32GB... and I guarantee the processor on these Surface laptops will become the bottleneck LONG before 32GB of ram is a bottleneck. But that's okay, because these laptops are more like a sleek stiletto rather than the massive club my Aorus 17X was.

Don't believe everything you see on YouTube. I don't notice any difference in battery life between the two.

If it was just one guy I wouldn't believe it. But I've seen at least 3 people benchmarking the Elite vs the Plus and everyone gets similar results - while they have similar battery life when you do heavy lifting, on light tasks the Plus gets way better (15-20%) battery life on both the pro 11/laptop 7. This makes sense from the specs of the Elite and Plus from Qualcomm. The Elite can use nearly double the power of the Plus - that doubling of power doesn't come free, it results in extra heat and battery life, that's just the physics of using a much higher peak power - and more cores require more power, more power requires more battery life, more power expels more heat, and more heat reduces battery longevity. All for minimal performance gain (and sometimes performance loss on the GPU side as it downclocks to accommodate the higher elite heat output), because the Elite gets throttled whenever a task actually needs its power in the pro 11/surface laptop 7. And yeah the OLED Surface pro 11 has a larger battery, but much of that is consumed by the OLED display itself.
Based on the research I've done, some common sense inferences can be made:
  1. The Surface Laptop 7 15" is way ahead of the Surface Laptop 13.8" and Pro 11 in performance when all three are using the identical model Elite processor. This means of the three, the 15" is the only Surface that has an adequate thermal design to run the chip at 80w for any sustained period of time.
  2. The Surface Laptop 7 13.8" and Pro 11 get higher benchmarks with the Elite than the Plus, but only in apps that run over a short period of time (burst). This means in these smaller sizes, the higher frequency and core count does help in the short term by about 10-15%
  3. However, in sustained benchmarks in the smaller sizes, the performance difference between the Elite and Plus, the difference is smaller. Meaning the chassis power design and heat removal cannot sustain the higher power envelope and heat output of the Elite at its max power level for any long period of time.
  4. The result of #2 and #3 is why the Elite gets similar battery life in heavy lifting tasks as the Plus - it gets throttled down to the same power level as the Plus, so the battery draw is the same. But in light tasks, it is free to go up to a much higher PL2 until it throttles, which results in the loss of 15-20% battery life in those lighter tasks.
  5. But at the end of the day, neither the Elite nor the Plus are ultra high performers in the Laptop 13.8" and Pro 11 - the high performance is reserved for the Surface Laptop 15. So then you have to ask yourself, if you aren't getting the performance you paid for in the Elite since it gets thermally throttled, and also it reduces your battery life in light tasks by a large chunk, why pay extra for a more powerful processor that can't flex its muscles in the heavy tasks where its most needed, while it also drains your battery in the light tasks where you don't need it?
  6. The choice seems pretty clear to me - buy the Surface Laptop 7 15" if you actually want true Elite performance, and in the laptop 7 13.8" and pro 11 go with the Plus for its better battery life and lower heat since they can't fully utilize the elite anyway due to lack of thermal headroom. Another note, you mentioned the OLED doesn't look much different than the LCD in the Pro 11 (and the OLED has that SDE issue that bothers some) - the larger battery needed for the OLED display also doesn't come free, in terms of higher weight - another reason to go for the LCD/Plus combo.

at this price point, wouldn't it make sense just get a premium laptop on a deal?

No, not if you want a tablet with a touchscreen. I have been using Surface tablets since the beginning, over ten years now. They have completely replaced my laptop for many years now.

How would this perform against a MacBook Air m4? Should I buy this instead of the base model m4?

Both do a great job of being thin, light, and snappy laptops that look nice.

The Surface offers some things that the air does not, like a 120hz screen for example. And of course the fact it can transform into a tablet.

However, I'd 100% base your decision on whether you want to be in the more closed Apple ecosystem or the more open Windows ecosystem. You couldn't pay me to be in the Apple ecosystem but I know a lot of people like it. This Surface is the new ARM64 version of windows, which was a little bumpy when it first came out but has now matured to support all of the most used x86-64 extensions, and is a fantastic Windows laptop for general use. Note the Surface will still work in tandem with an iPhone for messages, calls, and notifications if you have one via Phone Link, but the integration won't be as tight as Apple's own since Apple's is a closed ecosystem. You might also want to look at the Surface Laptop 7 13.8" which offers similar premium hardware and light/mobile experience as this surface pro, except in the traditional laptop form factor instead of 2-in-1.

Ok but like performance wise can it run Android Studio and compile? MacBook Air M4 compiles apps in like under a minute, sometimes even faster (like 20 seconds if on internal SSD).

It is. I've owned the SP4, the SP5, the SP6, the SP7, and currently daily drive the SP9. I've seen thousands of these at corporates / in airport lounges. Yet to see a person that tries to use it as a table. For the vast majority of people, this is a very light and capable laptop.

Uh I was referring to the guy saying this will be under $500 bucks but thanks?
