Edit: Ordered. Thanks, OP.
- Currently using an iPhone (switched from Android in 2020).
- I'm comfortable in either ecosystem. I was an Android user from the Samsung S3 days, so I'm tech-savvy.
The Offers (No trade-in required, keep current plan):- Pixel 10 Pro (or Pro XL): $1000 off. This makes the 128GB model FREE.
- iPhone 17 (Base Model): $600 off. This makes the 256GB model only $230.
My Dilemma:On paper, the Pixel is a "better" deal—it's $1000 in value for $0. The iPhone is still cheap at $230, but it's not free.
My hesitation is that Pixel phones (and Androids in general) depreciate much faster than iPhones. Even Google's own trade-in values tend to tank.
A few more details:
- My Usage: I'm a very average user. I'm not a big photo nut, I do very minor gaming. Mostly just streaming, browsing, and regular daily use.
- Ecosystem: This is the big one. The main things I love about iOS are Apple Pay and the seamless integration between my devices. I'm already using an Apple Watch and AirPods Pro 2.
- What I Was Waiting For: I've actually been holding out for an $830 trade-in offer (with any plan) that showed up on another line on my account. Of course, it's not on my line. Honestly, I think the iPhone 17 base model is going to be a worthy upgrade (supposedly the biggest one in a while, with less difference from the Pro).
So, what's the smarter move?- Take the free $1000 phone, even if it pulls me out of the ecosystem I'm pretty invested in?
- Pay $230 to stay seamlessly integrated and get a 256GB iPhone 17?
