Select Costco Warehouses [costco.com] are selling Tiger 5.5-Cup Micom Rice Cooker and Warmer (item# 1081890) for clearance price of $39.97.
This is YMMV since this is a clearance sale price. Check the Costco app for your local warehouse for pricing and availability.

I did a quick check on some zip codes.

  • These don't have clearance price: Brooklyn (11232) - N/A ; Rego Park (11374) - N/A ; Dallas (75251) - $99.97
Features:
  • 5.5 cup (uncooked) capacity
  • 10 cooking menu settings: Plain, Quick (for reduced rice cooking time), Brown, Multigrain, Mixed, Sweet, Porridge, Slow Cook, Steam, and Synchro-Cook
  • Tiger's own "tacook" cooking plate can cook rice and a main dish without the flavors affecting each other
  • 1.7mm non-stick inner pot allows the heat to circulate evenly while preventing the rice from sticking to the pot
  • Easy-to-read LCD control panel displays menu selection, time (24-hour format), and countdown to the cooking completion
  • Automatic "Keep Warm" after cooking completion for up to 12 hours without drying or burning
  • Reheat warm cooked rice and oatmeal back to cooked temperature
  • Store 2 preset cooking timer (for breakfast and dinner) to set cooking completion time to your desire

If you don't have a rice cooker, it's worth thinking about one if you eat rice on a weekly basis.. especially at this $39.97 price. Unlikely to ever find a Zojirushi at that price but this should be reasonably close in terms of overall 'performance' and cooked rice quality. Rice is fairly cheap and these make it easy.

am i wrong in thinking that the instapot with its stainless steel pot is the superior option to this?

Rice can/will stick in stainless, sometimes pretty bad.. especially in an instant pot with less precise temperature control. The one time I tried was kind of a nightmare after it browned and stuck. That's never happened in my Zojirushi no matter how long I leave it on 'warm'. Semi-sharp corner & steep side walls in most instant pots make them kind of difficult to clean stuck rice out of, too.

If you primarily make rice, the instant pot won't have as nice a taste or be as convenient so this rice maker is better and more compact. The instant pot is totally fine though if you don'tmake rice at least once a week. It is 90% of way there and slightly faster since pressure cooker. The non nonstick stainless steel on instant pot is plus minus since it sticks to rice but doesn't give you cancer.

FYI. They're mixed in with item 2081890, they look identical but make sure you grab the clearance one.

Don't feel that way, this is a very hard to find now. If your happy with your rice cooker, that should be enough.

We've owned this for a while and have no complaints. The steam basket is great for baos and for small frozen veggies.

Awesome deal, even if this probably isn't the made in Japan version.
