google says that underwear should be replaced every 6-12 months, but tell that to the guys that keep theirs for years and even after there are wear holes.

Cotton and wicking do not belong in the same description. Cotton does technically wick moisture, but it holds it in the fibers and stays wetter longer than wool or synthetic fibers that wick it away to aid in evaporating the moisture.
