This is a bare bones PC, no ram, no ssd. By the time you add 16G ram and 500g SSD and a windows license you are going to be paying far too much.

You can do it with a mini pc, which could run you 150-250 depending your budget. If you just want home assistant with less tinkering, get a pi4/pi5 and a ZigBee USB (for ZigBee devices). Then get yourself an SSD and hook them up so it boots from SSD instead. How you do it is up to your budget and set up comfort.I'm currently running pi4 with 2.5 SSD to sata to usb3. Ethernet to network. ZigBee USB.It runs my home automation for ZigBee, matter server, ddns, wireguard, mqtt for my ZigBee and frigate.Uses maybe 1.7gb ram at average weekly while load capacity average is 25% in the last week. It's great. Love it. Have it hooked into all of my home

So this setup I don't have to worry about the pie crashing because it's not on the SD card? If I understand it right anyways.

Your pi can still crash, but it will be much less likely from driver errors since SSDs are basically made to have much higher write tolerance than SD cards.

It may be an old CPU, but this is the oldest Ryzen mobile CPU series still supported by Windows 11. Keep in mind, Microsoft has made mention they will be dropping support for older CPUs with future versions of Windows 11, so be careful if that's your use case. The assumption at this point is those 2018-2020 era CPUs may be on the chopping block. Basically, Intel 8th / 9th Gen, and AMD Zen+ (like this CPU) are likely the first to lose support.

If you are just going to put something Linux-based on here however, it'll be fine.

If you want Windows, just get something like this instead. Zen 3, 6-core CPU, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD and Windows is included, all for $264. (Before tax) It'll be much faster with higher clocked Zen 3 cores, and includes RAM, Windows and an SSD, which is not included for the $130 barebones price.

If you are looking to run dedicated HA and nothing else then this would be best suited:

Why would you need windows when HA runs on Linux?

This looks like a good deal if you already have the RAM and SSD on hand. For example, if you got a beefier mini PC with 16/512 and upgraded it to 32GB/2TB, then you could drop the spare discarded RAM and SSD into this. Otherwise, if you still need to pay for the RAM and SSD, this probably isn't worth it.

(Also, if you have discarded RAM and storage already, it might be smarter to sell it instead. And then look for a better mini PC with RAM and SSD included. But if you are lazy about reselling, then this is a good way to repurpose that old memory.)
