I've learned that if plans dont mention unlimited data, then they are hard capped. This plan only mentions unlimited talk/text.

Ah ok - good to know.

I've considered going w/ Infimobile on their $112/yr 15GB plan.. that one specifically says that it *doesn't* cut off, just throttles down (which is nice).
I am on the infimobile plan now... zero issues. will renew it at the same price. I also have a line on USMobile when they ran a special plan and they are really good as well for the price. I need to be on ATT or Verizon for good coverage in my area.

Can I buy this now an active it 2 months later when my current plan expires
As per Ultra mobile website:
"I'm locked into a contract with my current provider. Can I buy now and activate later?
Yes you can. You have up to 45 days from your plan purchase date to activate your SIM. We will notify you before we deactivate it. Should you need more time, please call our Customer Care Team at 1-888-777-0446 or dial 611 from your Ultra Mobile phone."

"recovery fee" is just for them, not any kind of mandatory tax on the consumer. Weasels.

Hmm, I'm on the light plan with USMobile which only has 2GB, which is just a little bit less than I use, for $96 a year. This comes out to be the same for 4GB - tempted...I have a t-mobile network only phone.
I went the other way from ultra mobile 4g plan to us mobile 2gb plan. 1st year might be great, but afterwards is 156 plus taxes and fees so close 178. With us mobile it's 96 flat each and every year. If that matters to you.

I would choose the physical sim option. Esim seems to have trouble with mvno's. I only had my OnePlus work with esim for only one carrier, because I told them to just push the activation anyway. Another wouldn't, but physical sim worked fine.

I started looking at Helium's free for limited usage, but now I am leaning towards Tello - also adds taxes and fees, but no contract...
This is a great promo - thanks for sharing - lots of good info about plans by other companies in the discussions

Helium has a 3gb plan for free. Add unlimited talk and text for $5 a month, no promo required.
If you want another 3gb per month you can run their sprout plan as a secondary sim for another 3gb a month, total 6gb. I'm a big fan of set and forget. You save some money with these promos but you have to keep switching. Not a fan personally

I thought the big problem with infimobile is that you couldn't renew at their promo prices. The Amazon deals are only for new customers aren't they?

Same here. I have 2 lines, one for my mom, another for my son. Tempted to do this flip but not sure if it's worth it. The recovery fee is high... 2 lines came out to be $190, which is about the same as us mobile 2gb line.

Infimobile has 5gb+2500 mins talk per month for $75 a year, or 10gb unlimited data and talk/text for $99 a year. Been with them for second year now, not bad. Use my referral code for $5 off:YKXWAWF

If you don't need the sim card(use eSIM) shipped to you, remember to use a low tax state address(e.g. NJ) then taxes and fees are only $1(compared to California $20). Any address works since you're not shipping anything.
And if you must get the physical sim shipped, then try Amazon, they often offer same or better prices on Infimobile plans but they charge regular sales tax based on your shipping state not ridiculous cellular taxes.

Great idea but the downsides are 1. managing data between both lines. 2. I've read helium uses up a lot of battery as it constantly tracks you. I don't mind being tracked but some claim it eats up 40-50% battery a day on its own is very concerning to me.
