I am considering getting something like this for my basement, but hard to tell whats good and whats just cheap crap. Anyone have an insight, or a recommendation on a good affordable one? I have a standalone electric heater now, but it would be nice to program something and to have something to look at while it's on

I can't help you regarding wall mounted units, but I do have an electric heater that resembles a fire that sits in a mantle unit on the floor. I bought it used from a neighbor and it's fantastic. I don't have a manufacturer name on it but I'm pretty sure most of the floor based versions work pretty well. Or you can get a TV stand version as well. So if a floor standing version that resembles a fireplace or sits in a tv stand will work for you, I recommend them and just would say look at the BTU output and how many settings for heat output they have.
