1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.
3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV
Sim swap instructions
1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.
2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.
3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.
5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.
Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

This Verizon iPhone 16 Pro deal is mainly about a low monthly device payment paired with a $500 Walmart eGift Card, but the real value depends on navigating the payoff and cancellation steps. In store, the gift card often arrives within minutes or hours, and Verizon phones are supposed to auto unlock after 60 days. The main friction is that payoff access can be blocked for about 30 days, some stores only accept cash, and the line still needs separate cancellation. Sales tax is due on the full amount, and the gift card timing can be delayed on online orders.
In-store purchases can deliver the $500 Walmart eGift card within minutes after activation and payment.
Verizon iPhones can unlock automatically after the 60-day lock period following Verizon activation.
AT&T workflows can allow fast payoff and unlock using eSIM transfer, with unlock approval sometimes arriving quickly after the request.
Payoff and cancellation can be completed quickly when Verizon corporate store staff accept the payoff and provide a receipt.
Sales tax can apply to the full phone amount rather than a discounted financed portion.
The $500 Walmart eGift card timing can be uncertain for online orders and may take up to about 21 days after shipment.
Payoff and cancellation steps can be difficult or inconsistent at Verizon stores, including refusals to accept cash or early payoff.
Unlock eligibility and timing can be inconsistent, including cases where devices remain SIM locked even after extended waiting.

The fact that line is already active, should I just abandon this deal altogether OR should I cancel line by calling now and then pay off phone once I get it after a week?
I'm worried if I do that then there won't be a line activation in the first place and it won't start the 60 day unlock clock.

- the Walmart rep initially told me that a price chart sent to them with all the models and carriers showed the 16 Pro being $799, but the system shows $24.98x36=$899.28. Couldn't do anything but to go with what the system has. I guess they jacked up the price for the promotion.
- lowest plan available was Value Plus VL $60.99.
- initially forgot to tell him I wanted to down pay, but I remembered in time before he submitted the order. He had to delete and re-add the device, and the screen to enter down pay showed up. Lesson: DON'T FORGET to keep telling them that you want to down pay, so they don't miss this screen! Esp. if you're doing Verizon.
- that page actually showed the max I could down pay is $863. I ended up paying $860 on CC, leaving $39.
- Once the payment was processed, I received email for the $500 Walmart eGC within 2 min!
- Got home and finished setting up the ATT account. Needed to log out and back in for the line to show up
- Once it showed up, the Payments page has "Your installment plans". Clicked into that and paid off the remainder with CC. No need to fight with store rep! Because of this, for ATT it's unnecessary to down pay at Walmart, esp if you have CC that gives more points for telecom.
- initially encountered issue with iPhone's quick eSIM transfer, as the new phone didn't pickup the transfer request from the old unlocked iPhone. This was solved by setting the device passcode on the new phone.
- then followed the rest of the instruction from @gadgetNerd and unlocked without issue. New phone now has "No SIM restrictions". As @gadgetNerd mentioned, I only waited until after 1am to do the unlock, not 24 hrs after full device payoff.
Time to think about if I want to do this again, or wait for Event 2 :-P
I'll deal with cancelling the line tomorrow or so, and fight for bill credit later.

Did anyone else have an issue with their iPhone during activation. I purchased an iPhone 16 Pro and also opened a new Verizon account and new line, but when I received the iPhone I couldn't activate it. I contacted Verizon and gave them the IMEI & they have no record of it nor my account. I don't know what else to do as I only paid sales tax for the iPhone.
To pay off device, I had to get 1100 cash but Chase atm did not allow it and said its too large. Finally got the cash and waited in verizon store for 30 min to pay it off. Then it took another hour to disconnect. The rep played dumb and said that the line would be disconnect in one month. Finally convinced him to disconnect immediately.
Even though I cancelled within 2 days, the final came out as $106 on the third day. At this point, I cannot login in verizon anymore and so I cannot use chat. To use chat, the chat bot requires me signing in my account.
So I called oversea verizon rep who seemed to have very limited authority and had to wait for approval every step. 40 min later She said she adjusted bill. I checked again, now the bill was $91. The rep said I had to wait for it to update.
I know I have to call again tomorrow.
