There are advantages to doing this with ATT instead of Verizon.

1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

Not started yet. I don't like gc promotion because you have to pay tax on the full amount.

Thank you for posting this deal! Is the following correct?

1. Order the iPhone 16 online to take part of this deal
2. Once phone is delivered, activate the phone and place a test call
3. Call Verizon or log into your Verizon account to pay off the phone and cancel your service within 3 days of activation
4. Receive the $500 walmart gift card
5. iPhone is unlocked after 60 days despite not paying for a Verizon plan at all

Well this sucks.

Bought the phone on Thursday evening -- shipped last night, but Fedex doesn't actually have it yet showing via tracking.

Verizon is showing as the line being 3 days in already (Th, Fr, Sa), so it looks like I can't even cancel the line.

Wonder if it makes sense to just port my number to VZW for the 2 months and then go back to my family plan.

Cannot you just cancel within a month but just have to pay monthly plan fee…. Right?

Looks like they shipped out my iPhone last night (Friday) using Fedex home delivery, so there's no way it'll arrive in 3 days now that it's weekend. What's the impact if we cancel the service more than 3 days after activation?

Also are there ways to find the Verizon stores that can generate the link to pay off the phone by card instead of cash?

Went to the second corporate store. They told me they do not accept cash. But they tried anyway and the payment didn't go through with cash option. Is there any option? Can we directly to close the line and pay off the device? Thanks.

Did you ask for manager at both stores? employees might be playing games with you.

Practically yes. But if I'm already paying for the line, I might as well use it.I also don't see a way to pay off the line online like I can with my wife's phone who is still in our contract with Verizon on her family plan with her brothers

The manager told me they won't accept cash in the first place. Then I asked them to try. The payment didn't go through as shown on the screen :-(

No, you need a phone capable for using eSIM. As I mentioned in post, you can ask CS rep to unlock the phone after you paid it off, that works sometimes.
I don't have an active line on ATT to check, but doesn't ATT allow you to pay off right on the website?
Also, the "one time" "don't recognize the charge" to credit the activation fee, is it per line or per account?

Do they accept credit card? If so, why not pay with credit card ?

Walmart let you keep the phone but seemingly verizon ended your phone contract without you paying the phone off? Did I understand that correctly? If I didn't understand it correctly please ignore the following concerned monologue: I'm hoping neither Verizon nor Walmart will try to legally go after you since the iPhone Pro Max is worth over $1k which in some states in the USA could constitute a felony if it looks like you have a phone that you didn't pay for and someone somewhere makes a fuss.Do you have any actual documentation that Verizon actually cancelled your contract and aren't billing you for anything?Until you have some type of documentation from Verizon that shows the status of the phone I would definitely recommend NOT turning your phone over/surrendering your phone over to anyone…at least without a proper paper trail documenting who they are (make sure their ID matches their name/take a pic of the ID maybe), what business they represent, and maybe a signed acknowledgement that this specific person is taking possession of your phone (which has this specific IMEI and this specific Serial Number) for "insert reason here"…The phone still being under contract might be why Walmart couldn't actually process the return…Maybe you could go into a CORPORATE Verizon store and see if they can find your information and if you still actually are on contract for the phone or not…others here had mentioned that Corporate Verizon stores are where the phone can be successfully paid off.If you're still stuck on contract with Verizon for the foreseeable future you could choose to wait 90 days while only paying the monthly minimum phone and line fees and then use T-Mobile's keep and switch deal to pay off up to $800/phone contract to help pay off your phone: https://www.t-mobile.com/switch/k...zon-or-attYou'd have to pay a T-mobile activation fee and 1 month of service for T-mobile BUT T-mobile would give you a prepaid debit Mastercard that could be used to help pay up to $800 off of your Verizon contract…Multiple people on reddit who have used T-mobile Keep and switch just do 1 month of service with T-Mobile and jump ship after they get their prepaid card rebate. Unlike AT&T & Verizon's new buying out a new customer's phone contract deal/"rebate" T-Mobile keep and switch doesn't seem to have a specific amount of time that you must remain with them to prevent them from charging you for the rebate card/clawing back their money. It's just an idea of how you could recoup some costs if you're already paying for 1+ month(s) of service while you try to get this debacle cleared up.While you fight to get this resolved you might yet need to get any associate interactions about this situation on video (check the state's law of if it's a 1 party or 2 party consent state for video recording) especially when you're trying to figure out what's going on with the status of your phone contract and your phone…You might need to be in a "cover your butt" mode both so you don't accidentally steal a very expensive phone AND so you don't hand over a phone that you're still legally needing to pay for/have your phone stolen from you.Good luck with this!P.S. does the walmart egift card still have the $500 on it or has Walmart cancelled that card yet?
Switching to T-Mobile and leave after $800 virtual gift cart doesn't work. Last year when I wanted to try, customer rep said you have to stay with T-Mobile for a year otherwise T-Mobile is gonna charge back.

Could you please do me a favor and check if you can pay off the phone right in your ATT account on the website?

So, if I understand this correctly for me, the simple math for a 256gb PM phone costs $789 for a new customer to get unlocked.

$30.53 month X 36 = $1099.08
$75 X 2 cheapest VZ plan months = $150
Activation fee =$40
Total = $1289
Less WM Gift card -$500

Total phone cost is still $789

Am I missing something?

Once employees says No and they see you just created the line 2 hours ago the manager would repeat the same thing. It would be nice to update wiki paying off is now, YMMV at this point.
