There are advantages to doing this with ATT instead of Verizon.

1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

Not started yet. I don't like gc promotion because you have to pay tax on the full amount.

Thank you for posting this deal! Is the following correct?

1. Order the iPhone 16 online to take part of this deal
2. Once phone is delivered, activate the phone and place a test call
3. Call Verizon or log into your Verizon account to pay off the phone and cancel your service within 3 days of activation
4. Receive the $500 walmart gift card
5. iPhone is unlocked after 60 days despite not paying for a Verizon plan at all

is there a way to get the Verizon activation fee refunded?
No, not after 3 days. A CS can override any fee but they won't have motivation if you are cancelling service with them.

i got mine unlocked from AT&T using the esim swap thanks to gadgetNerd. few updates
1. i did not wait 24 hr after full payment to the phone before requesting unlock and it worked.
2. during the esim swap, it went through the AT&T account to confirm the phone swap.
Glad to know it worked. Can you please post what you did (with what phones) for others to replicate?

Got my 2nd 16 pro today from WM store. Paid all but $1 and then paid off $1 at VZ store . First rep denied and then 2nd took without any issue. Waiting for 60 day now to unlock
How do you pay all but $1 at WM?

What do you think could be a reason for this swap wouldn't go through? Like you mentioned this method works for most people, but its still YMMV. What could go wrong? Since the logic is pretty clear: the phone purchase isn't linked to any carrier plan, so we're supposed to be free to pay it off in full and move the line to another phone. I don't see even a place for a possible caveat, but maybe you know one.
So the policy is 60 days wait for the new line and the SIM swap is working around that policy by disassociating the new phone from that line. It's the backend system state that matters for the unlock portal to work and sometimes it does not have the right state for it to unlock the phone. I think recently ATT CS reps are good about unlocking the phone if you paid off fully.

No. In the middle of eSIM swap, in my case, my 2nd phone is directed to AT&T to confirm I'm requesting phone swap…. This is different from what gadgetNerd said…. Just want to share… it did worry me a lot… but the unlock request do go through….
One more thing, ATT unlock confirmation email doesn't have any information on unlocking code or steps…. But the phone was unlocked the moment I got the email. (Maybe that is what is called auto unlocking)
For Android phones you normally get an unlock code (untill recently that used to be the case but with auto unlocking Samsung and Google phones can just be unlocked) but for iPhone ATt always updates the unlock status in apple server and that's about it.

Went to the Verizon store to pay off but my account showed "Pending order" status so they couldn't do anything...anyone know what that is? I just got the phone today at Walmart.
I had the same problem too

Has anyone did this deal for T-Mobile yet?
Has anyone done T-mobile in store and got the giftcard right away?
Is it possible to use the giftcard from the first device to buy another device and get a giftcard?
Yes, some has used the first gift card to buy the second one. Regarding T-Mobile it will need a new line and their unlock policy is 40 days of active service.

This is such a stupid amount of work that may result in $100-$200 in savings over a lightly used unit, assuming you dont f up all these convoluted steps. Don't bother.

Yes, thats their policy. If SIM swap does not work, you can request unlock after 60 days even without an active account
You should ask CS rep for unlock before cancelling the account though as if they unlock you can then go ahead and cancel the account. SIM swap is the first thing to try though.
I just bought iphone thru ATT and tried sim swap with an unlocked phone and its not showing pop up option on ATT phone , am i doing something wrong? Paid the phone in full payment though.I guess its ymmv. Next option i have is only to reach out CS for unlock options. Fingers crossed

I bought two iPhone 16 Pros. The max down payment for AT&T is $863 plus tax. After the phone was activated in the store, I paid the remaining $36 online, and it took about 1.5 hours for it to show online that the phone was fully paid off.

Make sure you ask which account code they're using, because they added mine without asking for the code, so if I had left the store, I would have needed to reset the account code.

The second iPhone was added to the same AT&T line, and I was able to pay the down payment with a $500 Walmart gift card, and then I paid the remaining $36 online as well.

I will be trying an eSIM swap later today, because it only works between iPhones, and I have an older iPhone that doesn't support eSIM. I'm going to try transferring my eSIM to a friend's phone later and, fingers crossed, both phones end up unlocked.

The people behind me were buying 8 iPhones, all on Verizon with the max down payment, and the person in front of me 5 five iPhones, so it sounds like this deal is pretty popular in my Walmart.

You can't cancel the account before you get the phone and activate it on verizon network, that's makes it able to automatically unlock after 60 days. Canceling a account before phone activation will break your chances to unlock it.
No I get that I guess I wasn't clear. It looks like I'll be beyond the 3 day limit to get full refund once I get it delivered to my house. If I'm beyond the 3 day limit to cancel what happens? Thank you

After you swap the eSIM to an unlocked phone, wait for that phone to show up on your online account. Once it shows up, then you can request the unlock. I don't know what pop up you're talking about.
