There are advantages to doing this with ATT instead of Verizon.

1. After buying the phone in Walmart, you can pay off phone via ATT online chat. For Verizon you have to go to a store.
2. ATT activation fee can be voided instantly from the bill by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" when the bill arrives even if it's more than 3 days from activation which will mostly happen if you ship it to your house.

3. ATT version can be instantly unlocked using eSIM swap. It's YMMV but for most people it works if you follow the instructions below and do the transfer of the eSIM properly from iPhone to another phone.
4. Even if the eSIM swap does not work I have seen some getting the phone unlocked by chatting with CS once the phone is paid off. That also is YMMV

Sim swap instructions

1. There are two timelines for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. But as mentioned earlier that fee can be voided instantly by clicking on "Don't recognize this fee" in the bill even after 3 days.

2. You can use SIM swap method method to unlock the device.

3. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the eSIM. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then transfer the eSIM to another unlocked phone. Make sure you are transferring the eSIM without making a new one so no ATT involvement. Reboot the other phone, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.

4. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ (in incognito mode) and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of iPhone nd submit an unlock request using a different email, phone number, name etc not associated with the ATT account.

5. Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.

6. ONLY CANCEL THE LINE AFTER YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE PHONE. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK IT ANYMORE.

Edit: Forgot to mention you will have to try the SIM swap roughly 24 hours after paying off the phone. The unlock portal syncs with the billing system every night or so.

Not started yet. I don't like gc promotion because you have to pay tax on the full amount.

Thank you for posting this deal! Is the following correct?

1. Order the iPhone 16 online to take part of this deal
2. Once phone is delivered, activate the phone and place a test call
3. Call Verizon or log into your Verizon account to pay off the phone and cancel your service within 3 days of activation
4. Receive the $500 walmart gift card
5. iPhone is unlocked after 60 days despite not paying for a Verizon plan at all

It's unlikely you will get your activation fee refunded after 3 days. If you keep the service then you are supposed to pay anyway, you can request for a refund but I don't think you want to pay a months plan for checking to see if activation can be waived.
It is still within 3 days for me. I went to the corporate store and they do not allow me to pay it off. So it seems that I will have to stay for two months. That's why I am thinking if it is possible to waive the activation fee.

I have 5 lines with Verizon More 5G plan (promo from like 4 years ago). What is my best course of action to get this deal?

Add two new lines, pay in full, then cancel the lines? This will not mess up my legacy 5G More plan right?

I read fine print somewhere on the Walmart page that using a legacy line to get this deal will make me upgrade to a current Verizon line. Which sucks.
You can add new lines and cancel, that in theory should not change your current line. That's what I do with ATT for these carrier deals.

No, Verizon phones get automatically unlocked 60 days after activation even without active service.

"Devices that you purchase from Verizon are locked for 60 days after purchase. Devices that you purchase from one of our authorized retailers are locked for 60 days after activation. After 60 days, we will automatically remove the lock unless the device is deemed stolen or purchased fraudulently. Following the 60 day lock period, we do not lock our phones at any time."
https://www.verizon.com/about/con...ing-policy
That's the unlocking policy for postpaid plan. Therefore, we must be on a postpaid plan to be eligible for 60 day automatic unlock, is that right? The prepaid devices do require 60 days active service to unlock per the link you provided.

What if I am not able to pay off the remaining balance in store, then would I have to wait until 30 days to pay it off? If that is the case, then the cost will be activation plus two months of services.

I agree with gadgetNerd that ATT is a safer option.

But it looks like att doesn't have 512gb online, and probably not in stock at local WM.

Yeah I actually wrote down the number before I accepted the verizon agreement during the check out process. I read some of the previous posts where people saying they ordered online and they have to wait for 30 days to pay it off, that got me confused.
30 days wait if you want to pay off online for Verizon. Before that you have to go to a corporate store to pay it off (or if your way to calling and paying off works with a credit card on file)

It seems like paying off the phone in store is a huge YMMV, and likely ending up paying two months if going with Verizon.

How do we cancel the lines for ATT?
Online, it says call the ATT helpline. ATT store guy, cancellations are all with the ATT helpline.
But ATT helpline hold runs forever.

Will we be charged for the first month at $60 + activation fees even if we cancel within 3 days?
You could always use the chat box on ATT.com. At ATT.com it's usually a small pop up on the bottom right of the AT&T website.

The automated system MIGHT be able to cancel your account if the phone is paid off on its own, or you could ask the chat box for a "live chat representative" to talk to a human.

ALWAYS get a reference number for an ATT chat box conversation…they don't give reference numbers out after the chat ends, so make sure the human actually gives you a reference number while you're actually talking to them.

Since this is for cancelling an AT&T account you should probably screenshot the whole chat box conversation to have proof that you at least attempted to cancel the account…aka CYA (cover your ass)…

Good luck!

Hmm.. you have to wait until 30 days to pay it off. You can also try setting up a credit card on your account and try automatic payment by calling but they might not work.

I did what I can. I found out that my employment can get $10 off each month. The autopay only works for bank account and from the second month. I may try T-Mobile Keep and Switch if there is no contract.

when the 1st rep denied, did you went to the store again or wanted to talk to another rep at that moment?

I just updated ios on both phones and signed in to icloud account on new iPhone, I able to swap esim now and it is completed. But i got email from ATT that says "Sim change request received" will it cause any issues.? I ll be submitting unlock request tomorrow.
I was in the same boat. It was almost like the new phone couldn't see the transfer request nearby. Then it occurred to me that I never set a device passcode on the new iPhone. As soon as I did, the new iPhone recognized the eSIM transfer request from the old iPhone, and the transfer went without a hitch. I guess this is a security feature for unprotected phone.
Also I did NOT login to my Apple ID on the new phone. Hope this helps someone.

Pretty sure the email "SIM change request" is a standard warning so you know it's taking place. I got both email and text. Don't think this mean ATT is involved.

Yeah , I thought so Apple adds these kind of intricate additional hidden measures. Will try to initiate unlock request after 24hrs.

I am pretty sure verizon post paid unlocks without active service and hence the prepaid unlock policy spells it out explicitly. Many here can confirm it or you can ask AI so if are not able to pay it in store the yes, you will end up with two months of service as you can pay it off only after 30 days which will be make the next month bill to come as well.

You need to ask WM rep to put downpayment . You can put all amount but have to leave atleast $1.
Ordered VZ version on 14th Nov with expected delivery date of 16 Nov, however, now it shows delayed to 23 Nov.
The fact that line is already active, should I just abandon this deal altogether OR should I cancel line by calling now and then pay off phone once I get it after a week?
I'm worried if I do that then there won't be a line activation in the first place and it won't start the 60 day unlock clock.
